The track was a five-mile loop that included rtions of three motoaoss tracks tied together jth dense woods sections. The entire track ed into a muddy mess when it began to rain teadily at the end of practice. Hillhouse had to wait for mistakes from the ther experts because of a poor start - 1994amp Chris Tucker, '95 champ Greg Brown d Chris Griffin all started ahead of him and ere on the gas. Crashes and vision problems n began to take their toll, and Hillhouse used he agility of his KXI25 to steer around the deep ts and lapped riders and soon found himself the lead. He held the lead from the midpoint n and finished with a scant six-second margin ver Brown. Series leader Tucker had an off day nd finished two minutes behind Brown. The Over 30 Expert class had dirt track star onnie jones, Mike Connell, Michael Essin and y jones all taking turns in the lead. Ray jones led early, while Ronnie jones truggled to stay on two wheels. Essin took over ear the end of lap one but was passed a lap ater by Connell. Ronnie jones began to settle to a rhythm and slipped past both riders near e midpoint and began to pull away. In the nd, he took the win more than four minutes ead of Essin, with Connell finishing 15 secnds back in third. Sam Wash raged to an easy Intermediate in. Wash, who had been out for several onths with a broken arm, picked up where he eft off earlier in the season by winning big. His ap times were impressive as he slithered ugh the mud, building his lead to almost six . utes over second-place David Willard. He asily finished in the tot' 10 overall for the day. esults O/A; 1. When the gate fell for the first moto, Medina took the holeshot, pursued by Tyson Talkington, teven Forsythe and justin Yeast. One lap into the moto, Medina was able to put six seconds between himself and Talkington. Forsythe had to worry about a closing Ryan Caley while Yeast continued to distance himself from Forsythe. On the white-fiag lap, Medina had a 2O-second lead on Talkington with Talkington the same from Yeast. Caley had closed to within striking distatlce of Forsythe and looked poised to make the pass when all of a sudden, the front end went out from under Caley as he charged to the inside line of a berm. Caley's mistake allowed Forsythe enough time to hold on and come across the line in fourth. The second moto started with Medina once again reeling off the holeshol. followed by Talkington, Yeast, Forsythe and Caley. As the three front-runners distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, the race was for fourth when Forsythe and Caley resumed the previous moto's battle. All moto long. Caley was looking to get around Forsythe, who was riding as wide as p0ssible. With one lap to go, Yeast went down, handing the thjrd and fourth place positions to Forsythe and Caley. This opportunity was too much for Caley to resist, and he immediately wicked it up and was able to get around Forsythe to secure third before the checkered flag. Results 50 STRTR (4-6): 1. SEPT. 7 Mike Schobert took the fast time trophy at the Cahokia Creek Dirt Riders their thjrd and last hillcJimb of the 1996 season. The hill had received just enough moisture to make it tacky and fast, and Schobert took full advantage of the traction. Schobert piloted Tom Compton's massive 1325cc Kawasaki on a 2.754second first"round ride. Scott Hardey stopped the clock in 2.655 seconds on his KX54O, and Bob Fisher thrilled the crowd with a 2.675-second time on his thundering l000cc Harley. On his second ride, Schobert roclceted over the top in a blistering 2.485 seconds to take the Open win and snatch the fast time trophy away from Paul Hackbarth, who had delivered a blazing 2.504-'Second time in the 500cc class. The Hardey and Fisher first-round rides held up for second and third, while jerrod Lindqu;st and john Hillard finished fourth and fifth. Fourteen-year-<>Id jackie Mason II also had a very good night as he c1ajrned two class wins. His first <:an\e in the 8Scc class with a 3.186-second run. ational Champion Anthony DeHart fuUshed second with a 3.375-second time on his CR80. eal Strausbaugh, RHey Mullins and Cody Mason filled out the top five places. Mason's second victory came in the highly competitive 250cc class where he has been engaged in a season-long points war with perennial class champion Brent Stewart and Andy Fortner. Mason turned in an outstanding 2.68Jsecond run on his first ride to take the lead into intermission. The hill kept gettjng faster, however, and both Stewart and Fortner beat his first-round time on their second rides. Stewart stopped the clock in 2.626 seconds on his juruor jackson Yamaha, then Fortner flew his Forward Motion Suzuki over in 2.606 seconds to take the lead. Mason was up to the challenge, however, as he flew his Downers Grove Honda high over the hilltop in an extraordinary 2.599 seconds to take the win, just seven-thousandths of a second faster than Fortner. Fewer than threethousandths separated the top three riders. jeff White and john Brady finished fourth and fifth. Results SS/YTH: 1. Jackie Ma50n n (Hon); 2. Anthony DeHart (Hon); 3.
