By JIIy and Sheron Hauser Rsher flies at Castle Rock TT SANFORD, N(, SEPT. 9 Brian Hunsucker blew through round two of the AMA District 29 Fall Series at Devil's Ridge with gale force, acing both motos of 125cc 0 racing. Hunsucker pulled the first-moto holeshot and proceeded to roar off to a 1Q-second lead over second-place rider Ryan Carlina. Jamie Dineen was bot on Carlina's rear fender and would make the move to second by the halfway point. Hunsucker went on for the win, while Dineen held onto second. CarUna maintained third with Jon Quesinberry holding off Kevin Jones for fourth. Hunsucker again took the holeshot and proved to be unstoppable in the second moto. Once Hunsucker hit the halfway point, he had plenty of breathing room while Dineen and Car!ina went at it hard. Jones held a soud fourth till he stalled back to fifth. Eric Cox now enjoyed his first top-five ride of the day and was looking to advance. When the checkered flag fell, Hunsucker was a cool 15 seconds ahead of second-place Dineen. Carlina scored his second top-three mota finish to secure third overall, while Quesinberry duplicated hi.s fourth. Jones crashed out of the top five with a major endo, allowing Cox to slip in. The 250cc 0 class offered some tight racing. The first moto saw Brian Bishop pilot his Honda to a hard-fought win over series points leader Steve Otambers. Chambers used a strong start in mota two, putting some of the Unlimited riders between himself and Bishop. o,arnbers grabbed the all- By Clay Ught CASJ1.E ROCK, IV A, SEPT. 6 Rex Fisher became $1050 richer after a seasonbest ride in the Expert main event at the Darrel Davis Memorial AMA Western Regional Championship at the Castle Rock Oubgrounds. Dan Stanley, fresh off the AMA Grand National trail, grabbed an opening-lap lead in the 2Q-lap final, but threw his chain. From that point, Fisher maintained a huge lead to win. Expert entries were the highest this season at 31, mainly due to the AMA 600cc National the following night. Three heats took the top three directly to the IS-rider main. Andy Tresser and Stanley's showdown placed them 1-2 ahead of the surprise entry, Bret Landes, who also transfered. Northwest riders Mickey Fay, Jeff Annen and Fisher held the transfer positions throughout heat two. Fay scored a win, while Fisher displaced Annen for second. The final direct transfers went to Eli Price, John Hiebo and Chris Fitzhugh from the third heat. Two Expert semis finalized the lineup for the main event. Local rider J.P. Simonsen got out front for keeps in semi one, beating Ryan Anderson and Lonnie Kopp. Medford. Jeff Harsha was a man with a mission in semi two, beating Speedy Ken and Del Schnitzer. "Yeah, 1 rode like I was ticked off," Harsha said after scoring his dominating win. They said I jumped the line in my heat, so I had something to prove... Vernon, riding a CR 250, led Matt Gomez, Jeff Gabhart, Joe Lenz and Todd Hagmann on the first of 10 laps in the 250cc Pro-Am final and stayed in the lead to earn a win. As Vernon scored what looked to be an easy win. Gomez and Gabhart squabbled over second, a position that would go to Comez. Vernon came back with a vengeance in the 600cc Pro-Am final. The initial start was redflagged. which was good news for Vernon. who started poorly. Idaho's Steve Arndt jumped out front and had a good thing going until Vernon clawed his way to within striking distance and made a last-lap pass on Arndt for a win. Graves grabs gold at Willow Springs Road Race By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND, CA, SEPT. 18 -19 Chuck Graves won his fourth straight Toyota Gold Formula One Road Race at the ninth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club activities at Wi1.Iow Springs International Raceway. Graves' victory didn't come easy, however, as he faced some strong competition throughout the 12-1ap event from former F-l champion Peter Christensen. It was Christensen who was fastest off the line after Graves got a poor start, by.t going into turn four, Graves had moved up into second after passing Paul Harren. In lap three, Harrell suddenly felt the heat of Yamaha ~ mounted Michael Montoya, who had threaded his way into fourth. For the next few laps, Montoya would close the gap on Harren in the tighter sections of the track only to have the gap widen in the front and back straights where Harren had a horsepower advantage on his Yamaha 1100. M,eanwhile, Graves continued to stalk Christensen around the track, never allowing him more than a few bike lengths' ad vantage. As tap nine got under way, Graves made his move as he dropped to the inside of turn one and took the lead. However, Christensen was determined and quickly grabbed the lead back rounding turn two. In the same lap, Montoya found his opening. moving around Harrell in turn four to move up into third. But Harre1l used the back straight to repass Montoya. The next few laps were nearly identic;a1, with Graves passing Christensen in turn one only to be passed again in tum two, Montoya also managed to consistenly pass Harrell in the tighter comers of the course, but would be pushed back in the straight sections. In the final lap, Graves moved into the lead and, although o,ristensen made several attempts to get past, those efforts carne up short as Graves just edged him out at the line. The race for third saw Montoya get past Harrell entering turn eight for the final time. At the checkered, Montoya was able to hang on to finish just inches ahead of Harrell.
