/ second lead. Humphreys got by Lagaza to see that Knaack was gone. Meanwhile, Greg Steinbeck went from seventh to third by lap three. At the white flag, Knaack was way out in front, followed by Humphreys, Steinbeck and Lagaza. Clark pulled in behind Keller with one lap to go. Clark, all of 120 pounds, was throwing his 30o-pound four-stroke around like it was a minibike. Clark got inside Keller over a series of jumps leading to the infield step-up jump. Clark sprinted to the checkers with Keller right on him. In one of the last few turns, Knaack brushed too close to a mound of dirt, hooking his toe and breaking two bones in his left leg. The second moto started with Bobby Guilbeau out front, followed by Lagaza, Lucia and Humphreys into the woods. Only Lagaza, Guilbeau and Steinbeck came out. Apparently Lucia had cross-rutted at the bottom of the big hill and bailed in front of Hump and gotten hammered. Both riders were down and Lucia was taken out on a stretcher with two fractured vertebrae in his neck. Hump left under his own power. As the moto went on, Steinbeck assumed the lead and went unchallenged to the checkers. Lagaza, Clark, Guilbeau and Keiler followed. With Clark's win and Keller's second, Clark won the Over 30 Novice title. For his win, Clark received $200 and was moved to the Intermediate class. As of !his writing, both Lucia and Knaack were doing fine and tooking forward to the fall series. Results 125 INT: 1. J. Tayku (Hon); 2. C. Steinbeck (Han); 3. B. GuiI· beau (Ron). 250 NOV: 1. C. John5On (Hon), Breckon stealthy at Talladega Road Race By Van Funchess TAllADEGA, AI., AUG. 24 Rixon Breckon scored a surprise victory in the Vintage Two class of the WERA Vintage races held at the Talladega Grand Prix Raceway. Breckon waited until the final turn to make his move for the lead and just barely held on for the victory. The race started as expected with the class points leaders Tim Joyce and Mike Mathews racing for the lead. Mathews' Honda 450 took the holeshot and led the first lap, but Joyce overtook Mathews, underbraking on his Triumph 500 before the front straightaway for the lap-two lead. Joyce held the lead on lap three, but did not leave enough room for braking going into the carousel turn and was forced to run off the track, Mathews inherited the lead as he appeared comfortable throughout the middle stages of the race. During the final two laps, Breckon began closing as both he and Mathews. encountered lapped traffic. Breckon's Honda 350 had an edge in maneuverability as he closed in on the leader during the final lap. Mathews, unaware of Breckon's presence, followed a backmarker into the final tum. Breekon seized the opportuni.ty as he passed both riders through the turn and held on as he crossed the finish line just ahead of Mathews and Bob Gerl>erich.
