Wilson storms Rainier Short Track By Clay Light RAINIER, WA, AUG. 17 Silvarole triples at Hunt Moto Park MX By Michael Harasmlsz HUNT, NY, AUG. 11 Billy Silvarole took the overall wins in the 125cc Expert, 250cc Expert and 16-24 classes with a dominating six-moto sweep as some 380 riders turned out to compete at the Hunt Moto Park at an event that also served as the final round of the WNYSC ChalIenge Series. , The first 250cc Expert moto was led by holeshot artist Joe Ellington, with Silvarole and Greg Meeder in tow. Midway through the moto, Silvarole slid out in a comer while Ellington was performing some of the fatestlaps of the day to open up a commanding lead. With the moto winding down and Ellington looking for the white flag, Silvarole picked up the pace and pulled away from third-place runner Meeder. As Ellington and Silvarole came by the scorers on lap eight, the two riders were only two bikes lengths apart. Silvarole was looking for the pass as Ellington was doing all he could to stay in first, but this lasted only two turns as Silvarole took over the lead, outbraking Ellington at the end of ~ long straight. Silvarole pulled away for the win as Ellington finished second and Meeder third. The second moto almost was a repeat of the first, but this time Silvarole got out front early and led every lap to take a wire-ta-wire mota win with Ellington in second. Meeder finished third. Leading the first 125cc Expert moto were Silvarale and Ellington with Bart Lucas close behind. Silvarole and Ellington quickly opened up a large lead over Eddie Van Ballygooyeen, who 'had taken over third place. Silvarole took the moto win with Ellington just off Silvarole's pace, Ellington unchallenged for second. Taking third at the flag was Van Ballygooyeen. Silvarole grabbed the early lead in the second 12Scc Expert moto, with Van Ballygooyeen and Ellington in his roost. Ellington went dowtl on lap two white trying to move into second, and as Ellington worked his way back into the top three, Silvarole kicked in the afterburners and opened up one of the largest leads ever seen at Hunt Moto Park for the moto win. Ellington moved into second with two laps to go and held on for second at the flag. Van Ballygooyeen finishing a very close third. Silvarole came back out for more track time, winning both 16-24 motos after getting mediocre starts. Scott Ghidiu was second with Darrell Stone finishing third. Jamie Robinson was another double class winner, taking first in the Mini Senior class ahead of Marshall McFarland in second and Brad Bourne in third. Finishing second to Robinson in the Mini Combined class was Jack Carpenter, with Mike Adair in third. Results 46 P/W: I. Mati Eastman (Cob); 2. Babes Hughson (Cob); 3 Brandon Mell~r (Cob); 4. Victory for Velicky at Canaan Speedway By Sabrina Thomas CA: AA.\l, NH, AUG. 10 Justin Velicky proved that you don't have to be old as long as you know how to slide in the 250cc Pro feature event held at Canaan USA Speedway. The secret to the young gun's success was the excellent start he obtained. Aaron Creamer, Don Prevost and Mark Thomas all worked to take the lead out of Vel icky's hand. Velicky held on, with a steadiness that seemed beyond his years, and carried it aJlthe way to the win. Jeff Swensen held a strong lead in the Open Pro class as all the action happened behind him. Alan Niles, Prevost and Creamer were all packed up through the corners, when Creamer went high in the third lap and screamed into second. At the half, Prevost was campaigning to replace Creamer, creeping up close, but went too high in a comer. Creamer then pulled away slowly, and at the flag it was Swensen in the top spot with Creamer right behind him. Results so (4-6): 1. Tim Laviolette (KTM); 2. Tyle.r MacDonald (KTM); 3. Hite hits Cycle Bowl Short Track By Clay Light RAINIER, WA,AUG. 17-18 Washington vintage dirt track speciallst Gary Hite picked up two class wins during the Dirt Track portion of the Vintage Motorcycle Days event hed at the Rainier Cycle Bowl. In the Pre-Unit Open final, former class C Expert Hite posted a win on a 19S2 HarleyDavidson KR750 ahead of another HarleyDavidson ridden by Ross Poitras. It became a Harley sweep when Bob Smitti pushed his XR750 into third. Hite made it a double class decimation when he also topped the 50+ final. Ron Predmore followed Hite across the finish for second ahead of Sandy Ormsby and Pete Bennett. Predmore rode to the front of the Pre-Unit Open class and had a good thing going up front until Bob Lindsay and Hite tangled. Larry Saxton led the restarted final and was never challenged. Hit,e hung on for second while Poitras, Greg Sheard and Predmore filled 1.he top five. Yamaha 750-mounted Willie Ward took advantage of some dismal luck of number-one plate holder Mike Harritti the heat·race winner, to take a lead in the main event and, despite multiple challenges from BSA rider Rod Estes, Ward held on for the lead for seven of the eight laps. Estes edged Ward at the finish for the win, and Poitras finished third. Results 50+: 1. Gary Hitf': (H·D); 2. Ron Predmore (BSA); 3. Sandy Ormsby (Tn); 4. Pete Bennett (Tri). . In the 12-rider, IS-lap fiqal, Fitzhugh and Wilson forged to the head of the pack, trailed by Rickman and Annen, who was squeezed out of a tum-one lead. Wilson snappell up Fitzhugh's lead on lap two and, except for a brief lead by Kell, was never headed. Kell, who rode the exJeff Eklund GNC Rotax, stayed close to Wilson. but when Price and Jerry Southworth tangled, the race was red-flagged. Things tightened up considerably on the restart, but Wilson was able to tend off Kell's advances for his second win in as many weeks. Hickman. who continues to net impressive performances, took home third ahead of Annenand Fitzhugh. Randy Patterson won the Pro-Am heat race and did likewise in the main event. But Patterson's win wasn't a runaway as Todd Hagmann chased him down and hounded him for the rest of the main. Hagmann netted second ahead of Bob Moran. Mark Patterson and Lee Jensen. Three 250cc qualifiers finalized the 250cc Amain lineup, won by Joe Lenz, Eric Beers and Brian McGonigal. Lenz ran away with the final while Beers and McGonigal took themselves out of contention. Graves grabs gold at Willow Springs F-1 By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND, CA, AUG. 17-18 Cluck Craves made it three wins in a row as he was first to the checkered flag in the Toyota Gold Cup Formula One Road Race during the eighth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club racing at Willow Springs International Raceway. Graves has now won five of the last six Formula One events held at the California high-ciesert facility. Though Peter Christensen grabbed the holeshot off the line, GraveS was quickly around him and into the lead by tum two. Running in third was Paul Harrell. However, Christensen wasn't going to make things easy for Graves, and as the riders neared the end of the first lap, Christensen dropped to the inside of turn nine and emerged with the lead on the entrance to the front straight. Graves seemed to have the horsepower advantage as he rocketed past Christensen to retake the lead. In nearly all of the next six laps, Christensen repeated this move, passing Graves in tum eight and nine only to be pushed back to second down the front straight. In the final few laps of the race, Graves was able to open up a bit of a gap on Christensen to avoid getting passed
