Petty and Sherrod found passing to be a tough order and had to settle for second and third, respectively, behind Burroughs. Series points leader Tommy Sisson didn't let the change of venue disrupt his plan and Once again took the Semi-Pro "Dash for Cash" win. Defending class champion Darrell Bryant and South Carolina's Ken Liny were neVer more than a few feet behind Sisson, but had to settle for second aod third. The SOcc (4-6) racers provided plenty of action as well. After two restarts, the little guys put it all together and battled to the finish with Eddie Tumlin holding off Jonathon Pierce for the win while Patrick Johnson grabbed the third spot. Clayton Sims bounced back from an earlyrace crash to take fourth. Results 125cc C action whjle Masters made himself the Iron Man of the day by dominating the 85cc (1215) competition and finishing a strong second in the 12Sec C class. Masters got on the line in the first 125cc BI C combined moto and pulled a surprise holeshot. Mark Ragsdale quickly moved out front with Taylor in tow while Reynolds, who started in the middle of the field, was on the move. Ragsdale went down, giving the win to Taylor and second place to Reynolds. Masters beat the bigger bikes to the first tum again in the second heat, carving out a five-second lead and pulling away, only to go down in a banked berm. Reynolds grabbed the lead and kept it to the end, while Masters d.ived deep into the last tum· to try to knock Taylor out of second, but had to settle for third by inches. In the first 8Sec moto, Masters hit the outside berm and railed his way to the holeshot. Anen Montgomery gave chase, but there was no catching Masters. Dave Robel put his CRl25 out front in the first Over 30 moto and tried to break away from Mike Hamilton, but by the second lap Hamilton had closed in on Robel. The pair nailed the 40foot triple jump handlebar-to-handlebar, with Hamilton sweeping past in the next turn. and steadily pulling away. Jeremy White claimed third at the moto's end. It was Hamilton's tum to take the point at the start of the second race. Robel gated poorly and was buried in the pack while Hamilton disappeared out front. White lield down second as Robel caught fire and went from fifth to second position in just two turns. White lost touch with the leaders when he ran off the track at the end of the front straightaway, and Harnl.lton earned another win over Rober. Results 50 (7.11); 1. Cole Boutwell (Cob); 2. Sabin, Whalen whale at Gwinnett County Dirt Track By John Blackstock Photo by Wesley Freeman LAWRENCEVILLE, GA JULY 6 Doug Whalen took second to Joel Sabin in the Adult Mini race, then battled a fi.eld of competitive riders to steal the 200cc victory away from Sabin as the bFTL dirt track series took a new tum with round four by shifting to the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds for an evening of indoorstyle dirt tracking. The Adult Mini.racers provided some of the closest battles on this ultrashort circuit. Doug Whelan took the initial lead on his WKR-built XR 100cc and looked to be long gone. However, just the past halfway mark, the second-place battle between Joel Sabin and Bruce Dexter reeled Whalen in. Suddenly Whalen was back to third with Sabin leading Dexter across the stripe with two laps remaining. On the last go-around, Whalen stuffed his way back around Dexter, but couldn't overcome the lead Sabin had gained. Sabin took the win, followed by Whalen in second and Dexter in third. Whalen and Sabin bumped their smaller XR Hondas up for the 200cc race and proved to be very com, petitive there, too. Justin Weaver had the quickest trigger and took the lead to complete lap one. Whalen wasted no time and took over the lead when Weaver slipped just off the notch to begin lap two. With Whalen out front, Sabin was next to challenge Weaver. The battle became quite physicaL 'Vith heavy contact being made at both ends of the race track for three consecutive laps. Sabin finally cleared Weaver on lap five and set out after the cruising Whalen. Sabin pulled right up on Whalen's rear fender coming down for the checkered £lag, but close was all he could do. Whalen took the win over Sabin with Weaver finishing third and Eddie Martin taking fourth. Fireworks reany exploded when the Over 40 class made its first attempt at a start. Dennis Burroughs put his Bultaco into tum one first ahead of a hard-charging pack that included Bob Petty, Gary Sherrod, Billy Campbell and DuWayne Montgomery. It was obvious there just wasn't going to be enough room for that many bikes when Campbell and Montgomery tangled coming off tum two and Campbell took a hard spill down the back stretch. Travis triumphs at M&M MX By Stacy Jensen COWRAOO SPRINGS, CO, JUNE 30 Tracy Travis took the Amateur Veteran win over a field of fierce competitors as M & M Connections played host to over 500 riders in Colorado's Sports Riders Association's event held in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In the Vet Amateur class, Randy Shumard grabbed the holeshot to kick off his quest for the gold. During the first lap of competition, Travis pushed his way around Stacy Shaver, Kevin O'Connell, Jim Cole and Shumard to take the lead. Second lap saw Mike Kapplemann move from fifth position to fourth as Blaine Schubartb diced with Shaver and Kapplemann for their top spots. All three riders came over the finish line table top together as Schubarth cut across taking a tight inside line on a left-hand horseshoe tum and almost pulled off a terrific pass on both riders. However, the throttle power in the hands of Shaver and Kapplemann prevailed. Travis had his hands full as he tried to hold off Shumard and Cole in a fast-paced run for first. At the completion of the third lap, all three riders had little more than a hair between them and looked like one as t!)ey came over the table top. On the northeast side of the track, Shumard experien.ced a problem that gave additional time to the two leaders, who moved. out to a 5.99-second lead. Tim Hunziker had moved to fifth place, but then ovecshot a short tight downhill turn that stuck him in a hay bale and forced him to watch as two riders got by. On the fifth lap, the crowd's attention turned to the fifth, sixth and seventh positions when Hunziker, who was now in seventh, ouljurnped Schubarth over the finish table top and passed Shaver over the small set of doubles. John Clifford took the lead from Hunziker and passed Chris Dotter over the same set of doubles, but it was a short-lived triumph as Dotter rounded the inside of a snarp left turn and shut the door on Clifford for the 10th spot. The final lap saw Hunziker, who had slipped back to 14th place, put on the charge of a lifetime as he passed rider after rider and finally took over fourth position. Meanwhile, Travis completed the moto with a 13-second lead over second-place Cole. Shumard finished in secoDd, followed by Hunzik~r in fourth and Schubarth in fifth. The second mota win went to Kappleman, with Travis close at hand for second. Schubarth, Dean Haght and Cole took third through fifth, respectively, giving .the overall win to Travis for his 1-2 mota finishes. The Women's Novice class saw a newcomer for the season take home the coveted first place honors for the day when Kim Nebbia swept both motos, leaving the 1996 season points leader, Dawn Winczewski, to settle for second with Angie Schwerdtfeger in third. Brooke Renker took the lead in the Women Amateur class and neyer looked back, while Cheryr Place claimed second and Cynthia Bennett took third. Results 50 NOV: 1. Ike Yost (Cob); 2.
