JULY 28 Bobby Stovall was under fiert~e pressure from Patrick Slate throughout the 2SOcc/5OOcc motos, but managed to grab a double moto sweep to take the class overall in round four of the HammerHead/Pepsi Pro/ AM Grand Championship Series held at Birch Creek MX Park in Danville, Virginia. Slate decided to compete on a SOOcc machine for the first time in his life, but I.ooked right at home as he jetted out front at the start of the first 2SOcc/SOOcc Pro moto. Slate took control for the first two circuits, but had to deal with a very persistent Stovall, who charged right up on state's rear fender and ate massive roost for two laps before Slate fell victim to a bent rear brake lever and had to stop for adjustments. With Slate out of the picture, Stovall was able to pick up a slight lead over the battle for second between up-and-comer Chris Anstead, Shane Templeton and local ace Allen Alford. Stovall went on to grab the first moto win with Anstead nailing down the second spot just ahead of the fast moving Terry Kennedy, who had worked past both Alford and Templ.eton to take over third by moto's end, leaving Templeton in fourth and Alford in fifth. . Stovall pushed his way to the front when the gate dropped for moto two, with Anstead and Kennedy in tow. Slate had fourth secured when he tangled with Mike Eastwood and went shooting off the side of the track. pulling himself back in ninth but setting up for the best charge of the day. Stovall knew he was going to have a fast 500cc breathing down his neck if he didn't bre.ak away while he could, and stepped it up to an almost U-..econd lead on the pack. Meanwhile, Slate was on the gas hard and had picked off every rider in his way. Once past Kennedy on the end of lap two, he had dear track between himself and Stovall. Slate proceeded to put on a display of big bore riding as he sliced off piece after piece of Stovall's lead. As the leaders received the one-lap board, Slate moved within five feet of Stovall and the shootout started. Stovall rode with every bit of heart he had and Slate matched him move for move all the way to the finish line, where the pair crossed the line in a ph,!to finish, not even a tire length apart. Stovall took the win by inches, completing a double moto sweep for the overall, while Slate's score of 8-2 earned him fifth overalf, hardly doing justice to his efforts. Kennedy secured second overall with a score of 3-3 over Anstead's score of 2-5. Templeton claimed fourth overall Slate made up for his bad luck by taking the overall in 125cc Pro radng, grabbing th.e first moto win over Brandon Turlington and Templeton. then did battle with Birch Creek's mud in the second moto, falling .six times en route to a second-place finish behind newcomer Danny Dalley. Parsons MORENO VALLEY, CA, JULY 27 Joe Stern remained consistent and patient for the overall win in the Intermediate class at Starwest Supercross Park's Saturday evening event held in Moreno Valley, California. As the gate dropped for the first moto, it was Bill Schultz reeling off the holeshot. Rick Roberts was in hot pursuit, followed by Dave Breno, Stem and Greg Williams. As the freight train of riders came around for the first lap, Roberts challenged Schultz for the lead as Stem managed to get around Breno for third, leaving Breno to fend off a hard-charging Williams. Roberts got around Schultz on lap two, while Stem waited patiently for a mistake by one of the two front-runnners. Stem·s gamble paid off when Roberts stalled his bike on lap four and came to a complete stop, interrupting Schultz's progress and handing Stern the lead. Schultz was able to get under way again and dropped in behind a revitalized Stem, with company in the form of Rob Townley, Williams and Breno as Roberts finally got the big four-stroke started and fell back into the fray in sixth place. Stern was able to put a three-second cushion between himself and the battle between Schultz and Townley, while the faint sound of a closing four stroke got clearer and clearer in the frontrunners' ears. Roberts rode like a man possessed, and disposed of Breno and Williams to close within strikir)g distance of Townley and Schultz, who in turn had closed in on a tiring Stem. With one lap to go, it was anyone's race. Townley and Schultz came to the left and right of Stern in turn five as Roberts railed the outside line. It looked as if Roberts would pull off the ultimate last lap victory, but he was denied when h'is motor stalled once again. Stem came across the tine as the race winner, with Schultz, Townley, Williams, Roberts and Sreno filling out the top six positions, respectively. Looking to secure the overall for the evening, Ste,m put his SOOcc into the first tum ahead of the rest of the pack at the start of the second moto. Williams, Roberts, Schultz and· Breno looked determ, ined to keep a refreshed Stern in sight. By lap two, Roberts had got around Williams and was closing on Stem, leaving Williams to fend off Schultz and Breno.
