MOTOCROSS. . . World 'ChampiOnship 500cc Motocross Series Round 8: Irish 500cc GP I New Zealander Shayne King moved to the top ot the leaderboard with an overall win at the 500cc GP. He moved aheed of previous series points lead Joel Smets. who went 12-9. came out, then topped when his Honda seized. "1 think the radiator had lost all the coolant about six laps earlier," said King. "AII the Hondas had the same problem to some degree." Just to prove his speed in the wet and muddy conditions, he went out and led home brother Shayne in race two. _ After a mid field start, Jacky Martens worked through to a second place in the opener, only to inherit the lead when Darryll King struck problems. A sixth place in race two was good enough to put the former champion on the podium in second overall at the end of the day. Holland's Gert Jan Van Doorn secured third overall with consistent fourth and tltird finishes. Ireland's Mark Farrelly kept the 2000-strong band of locals happy with a strong ninth in race one, while Brian Wheeler, Jason Higgs, James Marsh and Daniel Smith all went home with a few more points to their names. Peter Johansson .led the second moto until he simply couldn't turn the throttle anymore in the mud. "1 had changed my style of gJoves," he said. "Those 1used in the second moto were hopeless once they got covered in slimy mud." The rain and mud made things difficult for lap scoring - there were four attempts to produce results for the first mota - but no one could fault the organization or the preparation. By Alex Hodgkinson CORK, IRELAND, JULY 21 TM'S Kiwi charger Shayne King bounced back to the head of the 500cc GP championship table with his fifth overall win at the Irish GP, staged at the superbly prepared Vernon Mount circuit on the outskirts of Cork in the south of the country. Unfortunately for the organizers, the weather played a big part in the outcome of the event. Just as activity K started on the circuit on Sunday morning, the first rain after three weeks of unbroken sunshine started to pour down and it continued for most of the day. King coped best with the steadily worsening conditions to take the overall from tltird and second placings. Title leader at the start of the day, Belgium's defending champ Joel Smets had the sort of weekend he will want to forget. The Husaberg rider crashed on the second corner of the opening lap in race one and restarted in dead last. With the circuit down to a single line in many places, he did well to recover sufficiently to take four points for 12th place at the flag. Second time out Smets suffered an uncharacteristic bad start, completing the first lap back in 19th spot. By the end of the race he had climbed through to ninth - seven points.
