Dewe)' had to work for third in the opening moto. Dewey had to charge through the pack after going down in the sand switch-backs • early in the mota. Pete Sassano grabbed the number-two position in the opening mota, and claiming a third in the final moto good for the third overall for the day. Dewey pulled the second-mota shot and held the winning position for the mota. Meanwhile Watson had to work through the field after a sixth-place start. Once Watson moved his Suzuki through the pack into second, Dewey was long gone. Watson took the overall win with 1-2 finishes. Dewey had a bad opening mota, taking third, which combined with his final-moto win for second overall. Results Lewis, Macy explode at Firecracker Speedway Gardner and Doug Lynch and Duane Carmont and Rich Tarling were all breathing down Lewis and Mary's necks with eight points. Steve Stanton and Jack Straw were still in the hunt with seven. Gardner and Lynch and Steele and King each took wins in their round-four heats. Then Lewis and Mary, Stanton and Straw and Carmont and Tading all met, along with Dave and Ray Stephens in the next heat. A crash knocked Stanton and Straw out, caused Stephens and Stephens to be disqualified and left Tarting with an injured hand and ribs. With King 6JJing in for kept their momentum. At the end of the second lap, Wilson held a four-second lead over Beckie. Dax Kastrin had moved into third', Alan Sherlock was up to fourth and Jeremy Schmidt was fifth. Gibbs crashed out of the top five during the second lap in the sand switchbacks. Beckie threw away hi Suzuki in the back sand section, dropping out the top five. Wilson came home with an easy win over Kastrin, with Geg Lykens on the gas for third. Sherlock and Schmidt came home fourth and fifth. Brett Wagner took the win in the highly competitive Auto (4-6) division. He battled with Chris Rose and Caleb Jorgenson. Rose nailed the first-mota hol~hot, but his front end washed out in the first comer. Wagner came out of the second comer with the lead over Jorgenson and David Bacon. Rose was back up to fourth by the second lap, but slid out again while dicing with Jorgenson on the fourth lap. Wagner kept cool and clean out front for the opening-mota win. Wagner and Rose came out to do battle in the Second mota, with Rose leading the way until he got caught in traffic. Wagner worked the traffic to his advantage, taking the mota win and the overaU. Rose came in second overall with 4-2 mOlos, and Jorgenson rounded out the top three with 3-3 motos. Tarling, Carmont made the restart. Lewis and Results By Mike Maher VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 4 The standing-room-only crowd at Speedway USA for the speedway sidecar Firecracker Derby saw fireworks on and off the traCk, with the team of Peter Lewis and Jamie Mary taking the hard-..amed title. Lewis and Mary established themselves as early favorites as the only team to score victories in each of their first three heat races for a perfect nine points. Dean Steele and Dwayne King, Dirk Mary pulled out the victory at the last moment. After Oyde Dennen and Dale Leeder won the final round·four heat, the points stood at Lewis' and Mary, 12; Steele and King and Gardner and Lynch, 11; and Carmont and TarJ.i.ng, 10. In the final heat round Joe Petrgalovic and John Abright beat Carmont and King, Ian Stewart and Chris Chapman dusted Struin Glass and Mike McDonnell and Dan Lameroux and Mike Moreno defeated Alan Han and Dirk Votaw in two rig races. Now it was time for the main event. A victo- ry by Lewis and Mary and the title was theirs. If they finished second to Steele and King or Gardner and Lynch there would be a championship runoff and if they finished behind them the title would go to the winner. Lewis and Mary did not let the suspense last long. They shot out into the lead at the start and stayed there, although Gardner and Lynch made them work for i~ finishing second in the race and second overall. Results SDCR: 1.. Mike Boy~ Wilson in bloom at Red Bud Motocross By Larry Wlbner BUOiANAN, MI, JULY 6 Jimmy Wilson enjoyed a perfect evening in the 2S0cc B class at the sixth round of Red Bud Track and Trail's Suzuki Motocross Series. A crowd estimated at 8000 turned out to 44 watch as 700 racers competed in the final round of the series. Prizes were given by Malcolm Smith, FMF, Scott and Nine One One MJ( Shop, with plenty of Suzuki contingency money awarded. In the final mota in the 250cc B division, WiI· son grabbed the holeshot with Jeff Beckie and Russell Bibbs in contention. A first
