By Tony Alessi 2 PERRIS, CA, JULY &-7 ewitt, Michigan's teenage sensation Nic Wey posted an awesome four-class victory inboth 125cc Modified and 250cc Intermediate . divisions during the Team Green GFI Youth National MX at Perris Raceway. Wey joined over 600 other entrants, some of whom traveled from various parts of'the country including Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio and New Mexico to be a part of this event. . "It's a good opportunity for some of these racers who have come from the Midwest and the East to get some exp0sure that they deserve," said new Team Green manager Ron Heben. "This is one of the few amateur Nationals that's in the backyard of the factories and the aftermarket companies." This year's format awarded points on a per-moto basis, with total points being tallied at the end of both days of racing to determine the overall champion. Top points earners in each division would be awarded new GT mountain bikes, while other top-placing riders would earn product and prizes from numerous vendors including AC Racing, Motul, FMF, AXO, Wiseco, Pro Circuit, Scott, CTi and Powerbars. Even Yamaha's Mike Guerra was impressed. "It looks like the number of entries has doubled since the last time I was here in 1994," he said. "Next year Yamaha will be paying contingency like Kawasaki at this race. This could be the biggest amateur race on the West Coast, and most agree we need a big amateur National on the West Coast." Without a doubt the most impressive rider of the week was Team Green's Wey. "This kid has unbelievable talent and potential," said Team Green off-road race director Mike Raring. Wey won five out of six motos entered in route to overall wins in the 125cc Modified and 250cc Intermediate classes during both MX and SX events. In the end, the only rider to spoil Wey's perfect scorecard was Team Suzuki's future pro Jiri Dostal, who won the first moto of the 125cc Modified .Intermediate class during Saturday's MX event. "I got a bad start and by the time I got to second place he was gone," Wey said. Wey returned with a vengeance and shot down Dostal in the all-important second moto to score the moto win and overall victory. Another impressive rider during the weekend was Oregon's Mike Corder who, in only his second year of competition, was able to record an overall win in the 125cc Novice class during Sunday's SXround. Corder used fearless leaps over all the tracks obstacles en route to the supercross win, while Nevada's Michael Diloreto used consistent rides to score the overall class victory. Diloreto gave credit for his victories to Jim Holley for teaching him how to properly prepare for the event and Al Holley for giving him the edge on the race track. The BOcc class saw different winners in each class with Team Green's Billy Payne and Team Honda's Bryan McGavran splitting the Super Mini divi- sion. Payne topped the MX test, while McGavran came home the winner on supercross Sunday. Justin Buckelew topped the charts in the Stock (14-16) class on both days of competition. Team Suzuki's Shane Bess was arguably the most successful of all the 80cc riders and posted overall wins in the 80cc Stock and Modified (9-11) divisions on Saturday's motocross, then returned to top the charts during'5unday's supercross round in the Modified (9-11) race. Bess' only defeat came in the Stock (9-11) division on Sunday when a hard crash left him second· overall behind Dylan Lord. Bess' main competition, Team Green's Bobby Bonds, suffered a broken wrist on . day one which ultimately ended his chances for victory. Sean Collier almost had a perfect weekend in the 60cc (9-11) division by winning every moto of the weekend except for the very last race. Moments before the start of Collier's final moto, he discovered he had a rear flat tire. His pit team tried in vain to pump up the rear tire, but by the time the first lap had expired, his rear tire had gone completely flat. "I had the holeshot," explained Collier, "but the first big jump I landed off all the air came out." Collier rode out the rest of the race with the flat tire and wound up finishing fifth, which was still good enough to secure the overall championship in the 60cc (9-11) divisiorL Team KTM's Pee Wee support racer Mike Alessi claimed two division championships by posting six out of eight class victories in the 50cc (7-8) and 60cc (4-8) divisions. Alessi was defeated by Arizona's Dennis Jonon in the 50cc Stock (7-8) class on Sunday, while Ed Herring had the honors in the 60cc Stock (6-8) moto on Saturday.
