Besides the superbike event, we're looking at the possibilty of running rounds of our AMA Grand National Championship Series and an outdoor motocross or supercross here. We would like to one day have a super cycle weekend here. We are looking forward to this association" Association is the name of the game, as far as Clyne is concerned, and it has shown through in Clyne's successful rallying of the community of Las Vegas to get it behind the project, which will bring a projected $1.95 billion in annual revenue to the city - without gaming, y;hich could bump the total an additional $1 billion "What we're doing is bringing the community together," Clyne said. "'There will be no gaming or hotels on the pro~ erty. But each section of the grandstand will be named after one of the resorts in town, and the fans who sit in those sections will be able to ride shuttles to and from the resorts." In addition, Clyne said that operations in and around L VMS will provide an additional 1550 pennanent and part-time jobs to the area. It has already meant a boom to the local construction companiestaking part in the project. When fin: ished, an estimated 600,000 tons of concrete will have been poured and 10 million linear feet of steel will have been used in the creation of the facility, which Clyne said !oS being completed all together rather than in stages. "We're doing the entire facility at once," Clyne said. "Most of our efforts have been directed toward the superspeedway, but if you drive around the site you will see that we're working on the motocross track, the dragstrip and the dirt oval. By January 1, the entire complex should be completed." Nor should seating be a problem anywhere on the complex. The superspeedway grandstands at LVMS will have a capacity of 102,000 spectators. The dragstrip and clay oval grandstands will be able to contain 55,000 and 15,000 respectively. Oyne said that the modular grandstands being used will facilitate just about any kind of seating capacity necessary to get the job done. The race facility will be further enhanced by the addition of a 25 million square foot industrial complex, which will provide manufacturing space and race team headquarters. LVMS already has its first tenant, legendary Texas entrepeneur Carroll Shelby of Cobra sports car fame. Shelby is currently moving his entire operation, which includes the tooling for the new generation Cobra as well as Shelby's Goodyear tire distributorship. ESPN racing announcer Bob Jenkins was on hand at the media day to view the facility and act as master of ceremonies at the press luncheon. Jenkins may have summed up his and most of the attendees' feelings on the new complex with his opening statement. "I really' couldn't believe that there are 24 different race tracks at one ,facility," Jenkins said. "But I have seen it today.
