(Above) Gary Hezel (65L) and Mike Lagaza (327) argue over the lead In the first 250Cc Intermediate moto at Coyote Raceways in Colorado Springs. Atkins wiley at Coyote Raceways Motocross By Stacy Jensen Fraser had taken over the number-one postion. Taylor was in third place and charging. He di ved underneath Samson at the end of the back straight after the chicane on lap two, then pulled the same move on Fraser a lap later. Fraser repassed Taylor on the front straight. Fraser then rode a tight line so Taylor couldn't make the same move again. With over 40 riders in this race, passing backmarkers would be critical. Taylor seemed a little cautious, allowing Samson to pass him for second. At the finish it was Fraser, Samson, Taylor, Darryl Fletcher and Derek King. Open Superbike was another Michael Taylor runaway, but the battle behind him was intense. The riders included Samson, Fraser, Oift, Borthwick, Fletcher and Trevor Beckman. Steve Dyck was relegated to a back-row start after falling in the qualifier, but by midrace he was in the hunt. Clift pulled out with a mechanical problem. Taylor won the race and Fraser held on to second ahead of the fast-closing Dyck. Resulls OPEN S/BK: 1. Michael Taylor (Kaw); 2. Jason Fraser (Han); 3. Steve Dick (Suz); 4. Tim Samson (Han); 5. Chicken, Bullfrog top Perris night Motocross By Tony Alessi 2 PERRIS, CA, JUNE 15 jeff Matiasevich, alias "the· Crucken," motored away from the Pro class with a double mota sweep while Bullfrog Newcomer won the 12Scc Novice division after a chaotic second moto of racing at the GFI night motocross series-opener held at Perris Raceway. The 125cc Novice race proved to be as intense as any series-opener when Gary Dellegatie won the first moto after breaking free of Kenny Morris and the Bullfrog. The second moto saw the Bullfrog take over the lead position after early race leaders David Stanton and .Kenny Morris had a midair collision. From tha't point on Newcomer stayed smooth and relaxed and went-on to the moto and overall wins in front of Dellegatie, Brandon Dahlgren, john Grucella and Bomber Hernandez. Meanwhile, the Chicken smoked the 250cc Pro class, period. The 12Scc Pro-cJass winner Don Upton was one of the few who could keep Matiasevich in sight. Aleman topped Steve Andrich and Mike Chamberlain en route to his class victory. jerry Aleman upstaged Tim Beatty in the 250cc Intermediate class after the two future pros passed their share of current pros who had started in the·first division. jiri Dostal continued to show nO signs of slowing down· and blew the side plates off the competition in the 125cc Intermediate ranks with double mota victories over Aleman, Danny Monoya, Jason AbbOtt and Oscar Valdez. COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, JUNE 9 .Andy Atkins took the 125cc Pro-class win during motocross action at Coyote Raceways. The field of 22 riders launched from the gate down the start hill to the first turn with Lane Swink blowing away his competition to take the holeshot. Swink led the pack with Jeremy Hinrichs close on his heels the first lap. Hinrichs was able to squeeze by in an inside move around one of the short tums. Swink maintained second with John Murray and Todd Robertson following close at hand as Aikins was moving up from his start position of eighth place to take over third by the finish of the second lap. Ryan Oark from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had mowed past seven riders to place himself in fifth. Atkins chased Hinrichs relentlessly while Clark moved to third ahead of Swink pressing and allowing no room for mistakes by either Hinrichs or Atkins. In a short Sturn in the lower portion of the track Hinrichs was feeling the pressure and cartwheeled over his handlebars and into the dirt as Atkins, Clark, Swink and Murray flew by. Chad Wall aston, Colorado's Rider of th.e Year for ,995, put together one of the greatest charges of the day coming from 14th to third by the end of the seventh lap. During the eighth lap Atkins could no longer hold off the hard-charging efforts of Oark and fell to second. However, Atkins pushed back and passed Clark in a sharp left tum. The two top riders by now had opened up a six-second lead over third place. Wallaston lost control in a soft shoulder and down he went placing, him in sixth. The 11th and final lap of the first moto saw Clark on a rampage directed at Atkins. However, Oark stalled in a simple tum just before the finish line, wruch gave Atkins first place. Oark had to settle for second. Hinrichs, Swink and Wallaston followed in that order. The second moto saw Atkins blast off with a lead he never gave up. Clark tucked into second where he remained as Wallaston, Hinrichs and Swink held third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Results 50 NOV: 1. Thomas Suman (Cob); 2. Michael Henderson (LEM); 3. Hafer hauls at Steel City MX By Julie Kramer DELMONT, PA, JUNE 23 Robert Hafer won both 30+ B motos to take the overall in a regional warmup at Steel Oty. Raceway. Hafer led- into the first turn in moto one with Ricky Clemence on rus back fender. Steve Prullips, joe Cole and Chris Kriebel rounded out the top five until the middle of lap one when Kriebel crashed, allowing Ralph Bentley and Jeff Bellmer by. Bentley wasted no time passing Cole over a tabletop. On lap two Bellmer passed Cole on the uphill doubles. While Hafer pulled away, the battle for second became heated between Clemence and Phillips. Phillips found his way around Clemence over a set of doubles. Clemence hung with him, taking the outside in a lefthander for the p·ass. As the laps ticked away Bellmer passed Phillips on a downhill for fourth. On the white-flag lap, Bellmer made his move on Phillips on the uphill doubles beside the start and pushed his way up to Clemence, drama, tically taking over second in a left-hander for a runner-up finish. Leading out of the hole in moto two were BeUmer and Clemence, with moto-one winner Hafer close by. First down the following downhill, Bellmer shot straight into a berm, letting most of the pack by. As Oemence pulled away Bentley pulled in the number-two spot in a sharp left-hander with Hafer and Phillips right there. Coming over the jumps at the top of the track the top four were fender-to-fender and stayed that way until right before the green flag, where Hafer passed Bentley on a straightaway. Within the next few turns, Hafer took over the lead. Bentley soon took sec.ond, passing Clemence in a right-hander. Bellmer was pushing his way from the back and stole fifth from Kriebel on a downhill. The battle for third was again heating up in the end of lap three as Prulllps completed a pass on Clemence over a tabletop. Clemence got back around Prullips on the white-flag lap over a camelback. Coming in for the checkers were Hafer, Bentley, Clemence, Prulllps and Bellmer in that order. Results 125 A: 1. James 'Evans (Kaw); 2. Chad Sanner (Kaw); 3. losh Sweat (Kaw); 4.
