I·EVENTS. Jimmy L_ls on a very nmt MlItch'GSO SCnImbler IelIds Rick Doughty at the AHRMA Vlnlllge-iron Natlonsl Motocross In Sen Bernardino, ClIltromls. Lewis leads Glen Helen Vintage Motocross By Matt Hilgenberg double moto wins for the overall victory. Zack Miller notched runner-up and Matt Greene scored consisten! 3s for third OA. Aaron holeshot both 250cc C motos and led most of the way, only to be aced by Ronnie Yarbro. While Aaron was disappointed at being zapped in the last few comers, he had nothing tobe ashamed of - Yarbro had been a rising star in the B classes a few years ago when his racing career was cut short by serious internal injuries suffered in competition. "This is my first race back," Yarbro said with a grin. "['m a little rusty, and have absolutely no endurance, but it sure feels good to be racing again." In 125cc C, Aaron and Marty Pence mirrored Brandon and Kyle Justice's earlier results, only in reverse. Pence grabbed the win with 3-1 scores, leaving runner-up for Aaron (1-3). Lucas McDaniel, who finished a strong second to Aaron in molo one of 125cc C, had trouble with the rain-slicked Cathey's Creek clay and turned in a second-round fifth, for third overall. In Unlimited C/D, only two riders scored the same in both motos-Pence, the winner with 2-2and career C/D rider Jason Libera with 3-3 for third. Aaron's 4-1 earned him second place overall. SAN BERNARDrNO, CA, JUNE 2 Cycle World Magazine's Jimmy Lewis put a test bike to a real test on his way to the Premier 500cc Expert win at round seven of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association's Vintage Iron National MX Series, held at Glen Helen Raceway. Lewis was riding the Team Obsolete Matchless GSO scrambler that is a replica of' Bill Nilsson's 1957 World Championship machine. CRC hosted approximately 260 entries on a day that saw temperatures in the high-90s. Moto one saw Lewis third on the start and using the early laps to adjust to a right-handshift bike with an up-for-first gear-change pattern. BSA Gold Star-mounted Rick Doughty led at the end of the initial lap, and continued to hold the lead under pressure from Lewis, before th-e Matchless rider finally grabbed the spot. Doughty stayed close behind, then regained the top spot when Lewis slowed, thinking the front axle had broken when he overjumped a jump. Lewis realized that the low-mount frontiender had rotated forward slightly and was rubbing the tire, so he took off after Doughty once again. Doughty, meanwhile, was fighting a carburetion problem which had the engine bogging severely on jump landings, but managed to ride to the moto win ahead of Lewis. Doughty got the holeshot in moto two, and led Lewis by a narrow margin until the final lap, when Lewis squirted past and held on for the win. Carter Collision Service's Greg Carter was another Expert with an excellent day, earning three overall victories aboard a pair of Makos. Carter won five of the six motos en route to 25Occ, SOOcc and 30+ Expert honors. Sixteen 40+ Novices hit the track, with Rick Labgold sweeping both motos on a Maico. Tom Barnett guided his Honda to second overall, ahead of the Yamaha MX360 of Chuck DeRan. Vic Curti and Joe Crippen split moto wins in 250cc Intermediate competition, with Curti taking the second moto and the overall. New Intermediate Steve Sagely was third with a 6-4 score.
