Rose, Parrish prevail at

By Clay Light
MCCLEARY, WA, JUNE 2
AMA Expert Troy Rose took the win in the
Open Twin A main during the short track por'tion of the 12th annual Dino Daze vintage race
weekend at the Thurston County ORV Park.
Also posting an impressive performance was
Robert Parrish, winner of the 250cc Almost Vintage A main.
Rose's Open Twin A main win didn't come
easy. Former National motocross star Buck Murphy chased Rose for several laps but then
crashed, damaging his own bike and putting an
end to his day of racing.
"I can think of beller ways to finish the
weekend," commented Murphy, who was the
big winner at the Vintage Motocross one day
earlier.
Mike Harrill took over second position after
Murphy's crash, earning runner-up laurels
ahead of Mike Budschat, Chuck Hodson and
john Montgomery.
Ray DeFord finished second to Parrish in the
2SOcc A main, and Honda-mounted Corey Dickinson netted third ahead of Tom Sheard and
Steve Sprague.
Jeff Hiall also proved his prowess on older
machinery by taking a win in the day's largest
class, the open Almost Vintage A main. Dan
Kimbel, john Parrish and Tom Miller chased
Hiall in the A main, while Kenny McCann and
Steve Olson topped the B and C mains. respectively.
Greg Sheard won the Premier A main, beating Ron Pred~ore, Alan Moore and Ross
Poitras. In the Dinosaur class, LaFaye McCarver
rode to a win ahead of jerry Chinn and Rick

Graves makes good at
Willow Springs Road Race
By Eric Vincent
ROSAMOND, CA. JUNE 15-16
Chuck Graves returned to the winner's circle
with a vengeance, dominating the Toyota Gold
Cup Formula One Road Race during the sixth
round of Club action at Wj]\ow Springs International Raceway and setting a new track
record.
From the drop of the star"ter's flag Graves
made it clear that he was on a mission. He got
an excellent start off the line and within two
turns had already opened up a sizable gap
between himself and second-place runner Curtis
Adams. Adams decided to run the race on his
Super Stock-cJass machine after his Formula
One motorcycle developed mechanical problems, a liability that became apparent halfway
through the first lap when Peter Christensen
powered past him in the back straight to take
over second. Walt Dorsch moved up into fourth,
then passed Adams in tum one to claim third.
Dorsch spent the next few laps trying to close
the gap between himself and Christensen, but it
was not until turn eight of the 11th lap that
Dorsch succeeded in getting around the outside
of Christensen to move into second. But Christensen-unwilling to sewe for third-used the front
straight to draft past Dorsch and retake second.
At the finish line it was Graves in first place,
followed by Christensen in second and Dorsch
in third. Graves' fast lap was almost two-tenths
of a second faster than the record set by AMA
race,r Rich Oliver four months earlier.
