EVENTS Edited by Keith ~ George Roeder (66) and Steve Morehead duel In the 26th annual Old TIme Newsies In Dayton, Ohio. Old TIme Newsies Roeder rides to riches By Dave Hoenig DAYTON, Oli, JUNE 14 eorge Roeder bounced back from a near-disastrous get-off to duel with Steve Morehead and claim the 75Occ-elass victory in the 26th annual Old Time Newsies race for charity. The win was the fourth for the "Monroeville Racer" at the event, which benefits the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the greater Dayton, Ohio, area. Gary Scott and Steve Morehead are the only racers with more victories at the regional event, with six apiece. As usual, the weather played a part in the highest-paying non-national event of the year ($13,000 in contingency alone). In an event that was already a rain date, there was threat of further postponement with a storm just prior to practice. The Montgomery Fairgrounds drained quickly and the event proceeded. With a wet race track, a good start was of the utmost importance. Joe Eades gated perfectly and led the 250cc Pro-Am main after one tour of the fairgrounds. Greenville Regional winner Pat Towler and Marco Morello fought briefly over the place position. Morello prevailed and closed on Eades. With half of the race complete, Morello was alongside of Eades. Some contact and the slick surface almost got the best of Morello. Morello briefly fell prey to Towler but repassed him and raced side by side with Eades for the run to the' checkers. Eades held off Morello for the victory. Morello wanted to make amends for his loss in the 250cc main and led the 600cc Pro-Am field into turn one. Morello quickly moved out to a comfortable lead while an upset Eades picked himself up from a get-off in tum three. Rob Williams and Scott Shinn argued over the second-place position with Shinn getting the nod. Morello seemed to have an insurmountable lead with three laps to go. Shinn put his head down and came within reach of Morello. With a great run off of turns three and four Shinn won in a photo finish. Ryan Brown took control of the 600cc Expert main with Brett Beyer in his wake. Brown worked the middle of the G raceway while Beyer, as usual, worked the top. Brent Armbruster, Georgie Price and Glen Schnabel filled in the top five. Beyer worked the top of turns three and four to perfection for the lead. Brown did not give up and kept the pressure on Beyer for the last three laps. Armbruster put in one of the best rides of 1996 to keep Price, Schnabel, Brian Kromroy and Tommy Hayden behind him. The 750cc main was red-flagged at the first turn when the rough conditions pitched Roeder off and sent his bike back into traffic. Morehead was the recipient of the ghost mount. A complete restart was ordered, including Roeder back on the pole, much to the chagrin of some of his fellow competitors. Morehead and Roeder split from the field for a private war. Steve Beattie and Will Davis worked on each other for the third-place money. With five laps completed Morehead seemed to be headed for win number seven. Roeder closed on Morehead as they both fought . for traction. Morehead would have to add another second-place finish to his amazing total of 20 runner-up finishes at the Old Time Newsies. One final event remained for the fasfive fastest qualifiers - the $5,000 Edgar Fuhr Memorial Dash for Cash. Roeder, Rich King, Morehead, Chris Evans and Will Davis would sprint for five more laps. It was over quickly, Canadian Evans taking the dash honors. cr ResultB 750 EX: 1. George Roeder (H-D); 2. Steve Morehead (H-D); 3. Steve Beattie (H-D); 4. wrn Davis (H-D); S. He showed the fans why at Speedway USA as he put on one of the best performances of his career by capturing both the Handicap and Scratch motorcycle main events. Michael Hull took the lead early in the Handicap main event, but Castro and John Aden came off the 8O-yard line and were soon challenging for the lead. Castro made a bonzai move to the outside and swept past HuU to post the victory over Hull, Aden. Josh May and Brad Sauer. As exciting as the Handicap main was, the Scratch main was even better. Castro and Aden rode handlebar-tn-handlebar for the first two laps until Castro slid wide on the outside groove letting Aden by for the lead. Castro regained control and set out after Aden, pulling even with him in the final tum of the last lap and just nipping Aden at the finish line. Hull finished third with Sauer taking fourth. On the Sidecar side of the program it looked like the team of New Zealanders Duane Carmont and Richard Tarling would duplicate Castro's double main wins as they sped away with the Handicap main event followed by the teams of Joe Petrglovic and John Abright, Ian Stewart and Chris Chapman, Peter Lewis and Jamie Macy, Roger Loeffers and Arnold Fimbres, and Bob Brayton and Parke Weaver. In the Scratch main event Carmont and Tarting got into a heated fight with Dick Gardner and Doug Lynch, which resulted in a collision that sent Lewis and Macy into the infield and brought out a red flag. On the restart Carmont and Tarling took the lead and were running away with the race when they spun out in the final tum of the last lap. Gardner and Lynch took the win over Lewis and Macy and Petrgalovic and Abrighl. In the Support-c1ass.main event, Aaron Nichols passed early leader Cory Rudolph and held off Rudolph's retaliation attempts to take the win-over Rudolph, Terry McCurdy, Billy Lyons and Paul Hitchcock. In the Junior division Galina Miller took first with John Childress secoruL Tommy Clark third and Jesse Little fourth. Resu/la SOCR sea: 1. Dirk Cardner/Doug Lynch; 2. Peter lAwisl Jamie Macy; 3. Weisler whips Lodi TT By Donna Hall LODL CA,JUNES Eric Weisler and Steven Hall waged war in Vintage racing at Lcdi with Weisler ultimately grabbing the glory. The heat race was the most dramatic part of the evening. The spectators were on their feet as Weisler and Hall went wheel-to-wheel. Weisler tried every way to pass the charging Hall on every lap and nothing worked. Hall would drive off the tree turn into the jump alongside Weisler, looking for all the world as if Weisler would make the pass. No dice. Hall and Weisler never let off and made this race the race of the season. After all was said and done, Hall announced that this was the first time that he had beaten Weisler. and these guys have been racing against each other for 20 years. Weisler took the main and HalJ was second, but Hall says, "I know I can beat him now"'. The 80cc class was again handled by Tony Meiring taking the holeshot and going on to hold off Mickey Lane for all 10 laps These boys continue to improve and look as if they are going to make great professional racers some day very soon. The B riders in the 60cc class now have Nicolas Moore to contend with. Moore had been absent for a short time and is now back riding at Lodi every Saturday. He's very good and very fast, beating ou~the rest of the pack by a good 20 seconds. Mark Biscardi has moved up to the B division. and on his first outing he nailed the win in the Combined Open Oass. He was really pumped as he had been sure that the trophieS would be slow in coming when he went up a class. In short track action, Rob Damron's entire night was one big holeshol. Damron was on the gas and beat the competition by 10 bike lengths in the Prn-Am Expert and the Open A finals. Michelle DiSalvo took a very respectable second in the Prn-Am final with Woody Rogers third. In the Open A final, Bob Casey foUowed Damron. with Kevin Bricker third. Results SbortTndc: PRQ.AM EX: 1. Mkhae.l Rinaldi ~ Helms handles Chandler Mountain Motocross By Dennie Stewart STEELF. AI. JUNE 9 Shane Helms rose to the occasion to take the overall in 125cc Begin.ner ~ction at Chandler Mountain Motocross, while Troy Boykin finished with top honors in the Unlimited Money class. As the first molo of the 12See Beginner class got under way, Chris Lindsey grabbed the holeshot followed by Dennis Stewarl. Shane Helms ran a close third. Stewart soon passed Lindsey for the lead until the third lap, when he was forced to drop back to third behind Lindsey and Helms due to loss of rear brakes by virtue of a lost brake-pedal bolt. Th.e three held those positions at the finish. Stewart was off the line first in the second moto, with Helms and Lindsey right behind him. Stewart held off the aggressive Helms, who was trying to make the pass in almost every corner. In the fourth lap Stewart took a wide, outside line and Helms and Lindsey stayed to the inside to make the pass on Stewart and maintain their positions through the rest of the moto. Helms took the overall with 2-1 finishes, Lindsey was second overall with 1-2 finishes and Stewart third with 3-3 rides. At the first comer of the first1o-lap molo of the Unlimited Money Class, Todd Miller was ahead of Boykin and iron man David Brown, who had already ridden motos in two other classes. Miller kept his bike up front as long as he could until the third lap, when Boykin made the pass and went on to finish first with Miller in second and Brown third. The second moto was a carbon copy of the 6rs~ with Miller taking the holeshot, Boykin in second, and Brown running third in his sixth moto of the day. Miller held Boykin off for the first of three laps before Boykin stormed by. Miller soon went down in a sandy comer but was able to hold on to second with an exhausted Brown coming ill.third.
