·EVENTS SCott Sheek (26) rode to a tour-moto sweep ot the 125 and 250cc Pro clu8es lit UnlIdilla during round three ot the Northeast Classic motocross series. while Derrick Dailman managed four feet for third place. Randy Williams went 3-1/2 feet for fourth with Alan Petty finishing off the top five with a 3-foot effort. The 8Occ-class riders got farther up the hill, but none actually went over. Jackie Mason extended his perfect season with a 124-foot ride on his CRBO, with Mike Sarver riding 82 feet on his KXBO for second. Cody Mason also carded 82 feet, but fell to third place on the tie-breaker run with Sarver. Tate Pearson managed 76 feet for fourth place on his KX80 with Becky Williams ftlling out the top five with a 64-foot effort on her KX80. All these riders had successfully topped the hill the previous night. Jason Northrup turned in the ftrst sub-foursecond ride in the 500cc class with a first-round run of 3.925 seconds. Although it was a good ride, no one really expected it to hold up all day, or even for the fu:st round, as the history of th~ hill would have it becoming tacky and fast as the day wore on. But that didn't happen thi time - there was just too much water soaked into the hill. If anything, the hill got worse as very few riders were able to improve their times on their second rides. Luke Haas, the fast-time rider from the night before, came closest to Northrup with a 4.158-second first-round ride to claim second place, while Mark Shafer took third with a 4.386-second first-round effort. 125 AM: lam, Hunler (Hon); 2. Sheak dominates Unadilla By Dick Archer NEW 8ERUN, NY, JUNE 9 38 Suzuki-supported Scott Sheak would prove to be totally overpowering as he strong-anned his way to victory in all four motos in the 125 and 250cc Pro divisions during round three of the 1996 Northeast Oassic MX Series in New Berlin, ew York. Well over 500 die-hard MXers braved heavy early-evening showers the night before and blew the mud off Ward Robinson's Unadilla motocross facility during practice. When race time came around, the track was perfect and the stage was et for a little prenational sparring. Sheak, Yamaha teammates John Dowd and Doug Henry, Eric Reilly, Barry Carsten and Tony Larusso along with 38 of the Northeast's best, all banged bars in some wild-eyed racing in the 250cc Pro class. In moto one the air was thick with tension and humidity as the overfull gate poured out, down and around the ftrsttum The mud flew as Sheak, with a thrusting holesh t, ripped into the lead. Sheak stayed on the gas, flying up around the tower with Bruce Stratton, Eric Reilly and Doug Henry in a tussle for second. Reilly took the spot as Henry, Dave Kratz and Stratton were all close behind with Dowd, Larusso and Carsten on the move as well. By lap four the race was going from fast to faster as they leaped into the cavity. Sheak still led, with Reilly in second and Henry in third. Dowd made his move passing Stratton and then Kratz and set his sights on Henry. Dowd fought hard with Henry and finally got by him in the back section. Coming up the big back hill at the end of the moto was Sheak taking the win, Reilly in second, Dowd and Henry third and fourth, and Kratz holding on to ftfth. In moto two, Henry outran the stampede through tum one with Sheak, Dowd, and Reilly in feverish pursuit. Sheak was charging hard and made the pass on lap two. Henry and Dowd fought for second as Sheak took the win. Henry went down as Oowd and ReiUy went flying by to take second and third. Henry quickly remounted and salvaged fourth. After intermission the 50cc motes were run, and in true racing spirit, Sheak, Dowd, Henry, Reilly, and several other pros got out on the track and cheered for the Pee Wee racers, who couldn't believe their eyes. Haas hot at Cayuga Hillclimb By Bud Northrup The Pleasure Riders gave the hill a new look for the event, moving the second breaker back far enough to make it very difficult, yet still possible, to double jump off the starting Une. A near-perfect holeshot and launch off the first breaker could deliver a fast time if landed well, but any attempt far off perfect promised disaster and probably pain to the rider. Many tried and a few succeeded; many paid the price of imperfection. Young Derrick Dallman turned in an astounding 71-foot climb on his tiny 50cc Honda to take the Automatic-class win, while his brother Brandon; also mounted. on a Honda SO, delivered a fine 47-foot effort for second place. Zachary Duncan rode his Suzuki jR50 for 20 feet to take third place, followed closely by Justin Lappin, who recorded 19 feet on his LEM for fourth. Mark Matthews took his JRSOO up the hill 16 feet for fifth place. Jackie Mason con.tinued his perfect season in the BOcc class with a convincing win on hjs Downers Grove CR80. The 13-year-old rider from Martinsville, Indiana, topped the hill in 5.352 seconds, nearly half a second quicker than second-place rider Tate Pearson, who cleared the top in 5.809' seconds on his KX80. Becky Williams claimed the third-place trophy with a 6.194- second effort on her Kawasaki, with Matt Weaver finishing in fourth on his KXBO in 6.360 seconds. Mason's younger brother Michael 6IIed out the top five with a 6.450-second run on his Yamaha YZSO. Results AUTO: 1. Dmick Dallman (Hon); 2. Brandon Dallman (Hon); 3 Zachuy Duncan (5uz); 4. (Hon'- Northrup fast mudder at Pleasure Riders Hillclimb By Bud Northrup • CAYUGA, IN. JUNE 8 The Pleasure Riders squeezed in another hillclimb between thunderstorms and Luke Haas picked up his second win and also second fast time of the season. Haas' blistering 3.225-second run on his CRSOO was just barely fast enough to beat out . his good friend and traveling partner Marc Stamm, who turned a fine 3.254-second run of his own. CAYUGA, IN, JUNE 9 The Pleasure Riders pulled off a minor miracle to make their soggy, rain-drenched hill ridable but only one rider, Jason Northrup, was able to top the hill in less than four seconds. The SOcc Automatic class was delayed until the end of the first round, in hopes the hill would dry off enough to give the Micro Minis a decent shot- but the hill didn't cooperate. Mark Matthews picked up his first win of the season by squinning seven feet up the first breaker on his JRSO. Paladino top gun at Chowchilla Stadiumcross By Tim Quinn CHOWOffi.LA, CA, JUNE 1 Dan Paladino outrode the fastest 125/2SOcc Pro rider in the AMP IClawson Motorsportsl Mechanix Wear/FMF Stadjumcross series to win the Top Gun Shoot-OUt main event. Paladino jumped out into the lead at the drop of the gate. Down the front straight Scott Davis and Simpson would battle for second. Davis would grab the position with Simpson third, John Cook in fourth and Justin Quinn rounding out the top five. Davis, who was rid· iog a 125, would try to pass Paladino's 250, but PaladiJ:>.o held off the challenge for the first half of the U-Iap main event. John Cook played it cool in third waiting for the two front-runners to make a mistake while in the heat of battle. Davis tired of following Paladino and would wait no longer to make his move. He would pick the finish-line tum to pass Paladino and take over the lead. In the meantime, Cook would go down and both Simpson and Quinn would move b . Both Quinn and Simpson began a heated battle for the third spot. Simpson dropped his Honda in a turn and Quinn would move into thjrd. Simpson quickly remounted and kicked out the stops to repass Quinn. Cook would get back under way in fifth. Davis, smooth as could be, looked as if he would head to the checkered flag but Paladino had other thoughts. The two would pick up a pace that would eventually have them moving in on lapped traffic. Paladino would use the lapped riders to hjs advantage, passing Davis with two laps to go. Davis tried to repass Paladiho but it was to no avail. Paladino would take the win, Davis heJd onto second with Simpson, Quinn and Cook rounding 04t the top five. Results: TOP GUN: 1. Danny Paladino (Yam); 2. Scott DavUl (Kaw);3. Robert Simpson (Hon~ 4.
