August 9-11 AHRMANintage Iron MX Series: Round 9 he Grattan motocross, run Saturday under a hot, cloudless sky, was a natural-terrain grass, sand and woods circuit ·reminiscent of tracks of the 19705. Greg Carter made his trip from Santee, California, worthwhile by taking a pair of overall wins in two of AHRMA's tough Expert classes, Sportsman 250 and 500cc, and second overall 7 behind fellow Mirico pilot Wesley Fuller in the Over 30 Expert division after being docked a lap for jumping the start inmototwo. In the first Sportsman 250cc Expert moto, Darin Emswiler led early, but gave up the front position to Carter on the third of five laps. Behind Carter a good race for s.econd developed between Doug Wentzell and James Greenleaf, with Wentzell taking the runner-up spot. Greenleaf was out in front of the second moto for three laps, until Carter took over and hung on to the lead to the finish. Running at the same time was the Over 50 Expert race, and twice 500cc World Champion Jeff Smith renewed his vintage-racing rivalry with Jean Ramsay. The two were all over each other until Smith and his Can-Am managed to open a bit of a margin over Ramsay's Maieo on the final lap. In moto two, Smith stayed comfortably in front. The opening Sportsman 250cc Intermediate moto featured an excellent race between Floridian Craig Borders and Husky rider John Beebe, who shadowed the leader the entire race. As the pair made the final climb toward the checkered flag, they. split around a lapped rider. Borders had the better line and maintained his lead to the finish. In moto two it was Keith Kons chasing Borders. A second-place finish would have given Kons second overall, but Beebe nipped him late in the race and se=ed a second-place trophy for himself. The combined Oassie SOOcc Intermediate/Expert race was another tough battle_ In the first moto, Expert Steve Tucker was chasing Dan Johns when the Canadian's 441 BSA succumbed to an electrical problem. Moto two saw Tucker run down and pass Johns for the win, although Johns claimed th.e overall with his 1-2 finishes. Among the Classic 500cc Intermediates, Matt Parsons worked his RickmanWeslake 441 around David Light's '68 Bultaco 360 for the first-moto win, with David Tucker close behind..Parsons was the hunted man in moto two, and Ducati-mounted Da.vid Van SteUe was doing the hunting. Van Stelle took the lead from Parsons on the last lap, earning second overall with 4-1 finishes to the Californian's 1-2 placings. In Premier Heavyweight Expert, Duncan Wright loaned his new pride and joy, a Dick Mann-built 1957 BSA 500, to Jeff Smith, who did an excellent job of piloting the big thumper to a 28-point ride, but trials organizer Bob Capistrant did an even better job on his BSA 500. Capistrant dropped just 19 points, including scoring a 5 in one of the sections he had devised. In the Modern Classic Novice class, Tony Glueck and Bert Jacoby wrestled all day for the lead. Glueck ended up winning with only three marks lost, just one dab ahead of Montesa rider Jacoby.
