'li t'" s Hoenshell claims Gholson ' Cross Country By Darryl Smth GHOLSON,TX, MAY 19 DFW KTM's Clay H oen sh ell ca me hom e from th e seventh round of the Texas Cros s Country circuit with the lion 's share of the Pro purse after taking his fifth wi n of the series on the fast and dusty Gholso n cou rse . Lloyd Miller blasts his way through the Texas slit en route to the 45+ Expert victory at the Gholson Cross Country. Donni e Cluck put his CR in to the lead ahea d of Mike Abbott and Dean Lan e w hile Hoenshell had an u ncharacteristic mid pack start. Cluc k retired before th e firs t lap was com ple te an d Abbott s pun out , sweepi ng across the peanut field after thr ee turns. Th at ope ned the door for Lane, an d when he cam e throug h the barrels on lap one he was 20 seconds up on H oenshell. With the fast a n d short 7-mile loop, the Pros wer e hitt ing lapped traffic on the second lap . This helped Hoen sh ell catch and pass Lane before th e en d of lap two . Hoenshell pulled away from tha t point on, tak ing the-wi n by nearly three minutes. The drought in Texas le ft miserable cond itons and th e only thing that made the race bearab le was a 30 mph win d that b lew th e silt -like sa nd awa y . Abbott recove red fro m hi s ea r ly cra sh to pass Lane for second on the fourth of seven lap s. Lane crashed sh or tly the ra fter and then had problems restarting becau se his air fil ter wa s so clogged. Abbott stayed in seco nd for the rest of the race, and Lane fell ba ck to fifth at the end . Clifford Goertz and Donnie McMillo n had bee n having th ier own little race , passing each other thr ou gh ou t th e event. Th ird a nd fourth places were settled at the last tu m, 50 feet fro m the finis h line. McMill on ha d the edge coming do wn the wire bu t relaxe d a litt le in th e sho rt wood s secton th at he tho ught had only one line. But it was there that Goertz made an agressive pass, cutting un der the unsuspe ctin g McMill on in th e las t tum. Con tact was m ad e, probabl y a litt ie more than McM illon like d, knockin g him off his stride . Goertz had the inside mom entum to the line to steal thir d . Results 0/ A EX: 1.
