Garcia takes Barona Speedway win By Wayne Hosaka. .SAN DIEGO, CA,MAY25 John Gar cia on hi s H onda was com p letely in charge from th e star t as he took the Op en Pro final at Sarona Speed way for his second win of the season . The an ticipated battl e between Ga rcia and Travis Pettan was intensified when David Pelton ven tured down from Costa Mesa and won the preliminary. Off the start, Garcia held a slim lead over Pelton with Perry Proiette, another Los Angeles. area rider, in third place and Pettcn in fourth. On the thi rd lap Petton passed Proiette and pressu red Pelton for se cond . The stage was set for ano the r one of those dirt track duel so man y of us old-tim ers miss from the days of Ascot and Southba y Speedwa y. With Ga rcia ri d in g his usu al smoo th line, Pelton tried the low gro ove wh ile Petton attempte d the tacky but rou gh top o f th e trac k . The former British League rider drew th e outside starting position. To Bast' s right sat Bob Hicks in grid thr ee, Bobb y Hedden in two and th e e ve ni ng's $100 Scra tch Challenge winner Louis ~osauth on the pole. Hicks was the first away with Kossuth just inches beh ind lookin g for a way around on his Rose Racing Jawa . Du ring the first lap and a half H icks and Kossuth argued over the low line with Hicks stubbornly holding off the faster Kossuth. Meanwhile Bast uncharacteristically went to work in the outside dirt, with the cr owd in full su p port . Bart got hooked up on the d irt ed ge and flew past both Kossu th and Hicks. • After I didn't get the start I was hoping that some of that ou tside line wa s stilt there, and I used it,· the softspoken Bast sai d after the race. CA,MAY 26 Chri s Thompson came back from a fourth-place mo to-one finish to claim the overall win in the 125cc Novice class during round four of California Racing Club's 19th annual Dunestown Series at Los Angeles County Racewa y. A large boul der containing a plaqu e honoring the late Jeff Barbacovi was un veiled prio r to the start of toda y's racin g as th e JB Mem or ia l tra ck was officially dedi cated . Jeff's father, Jack, and br oth er, Greg, each spoke a few word s to the large crowd on hand. It was an emotional mo me nt for fam ily and frie nd s as we rem em.. bered a fellow racer . . Brian Reichel got ihe jump on Tra vis Smith, Dusty Walt ers and Ryan O rr as the first moto bega n. Reichel wa s look ing sm ooth as he qu ickIy es tablished a fou r-second lead over Walters, wh o had pushed Smi th back to third . Walters q u ic k e n e d hi s pa ce a n d st a r t e d r e el in g in Re ich el. Meanw hile, Jason Du b in was .slicing hi s wa y up fro m a 14th- p lace sta rt to hound Th om pson, who w as runnin g fou rth . Dub in wa s tr ip lin g a series of jumps th at everyo ne else was only dou b ling, an d zap ped Thompson and Smith at the same time wi th the move. On the last lap Du bin caug ht the tw o front -run ners a nd was ab le to pass W al t e r s . Dubin tried hi s trip le-ju mp line on th e ope ning lap while runnin g fou rth, a nd he to o went down hard . With so me o f hi s m ain com p e t ition on the gro u nd, Thompson w ould conti nue on un con tested for the seco nd-mota win. Orr man aged to stay upri ght to finish seco nd . Dan Eckma n came . from a ninth-place sta rt to finish third and second ove rall with a 6-3 score. Orr' s 9-2 finishes ea rn ed him the third- place trophy. Ty Kady used a couple of good starts to run away wi th bo th 2S0cc Pro moto w ins . Donald Upton held off Bill Sauro for se cond p lace in mo to one, but Sau ro got the upper ha nd in round two to g r ab th e se co n d- p lace ca sh.
