Petton prevails at Barona Speedway 46 By Way ne Hosaka SAN DIEGO, CA, MAYII Th e action con tinued at the Barona Spee dway Satu rd ay night short track races with Travis Pelton, John Dupree and John Ca rcia again putting on a great sho w in the Open Pro main even t. The 250cc Pro main event was another Brad Holt affair. Holt has wo n all four races this season on his Bultaco and seems unbeatable on the one-sixth-mile dirt oval. Richar d Pollock, in his first Pro appearance, di d well for himsel f as he pressured Holt early befo re fadin g. John Dupree staye d d ose to Holt on Keith Lyn as' Ossa and finishe d second with steady Pat Dwyer third . Th e crowd w as bu zzing as th e O pe n Pro ma in ev en t stage d. Travis Petton wa s rid in g desp ite th ree broken ribs incu rred at the pr evious Bar on a bash. Off the start, Petton grabbed the lead with John Dupree and C arcia following. The th reesom e gradually pull ed awa y from the pack wi th Mar k Aragon hangin g on admi rably on a less than exotic Suzu ki single in fou rth. Petton wa s sq uarin g off the corn er s and findi ng good traction down low coming off of tum two and four. Dupree was d riving in hard and sliding wildl y as Garcia pa t ie n tly sat back a n d tracked around on the groove. As they encounte r ed backm ark crs, th e actio n in te n s ified . Dupree wa s getti ng along side Pett on m id way throu gh the comer, but Petton wa s getting the dri ve d own th e s tra igh tawa y _ G a r ci a w as smoo th and patient in third . With three laps to go, Gar cia mad e his move. Passing Dupree coming ou t of tum fou r, Garcia se t his sights on Pett on. The two ride rs had gotten togeth er in the previous mai n event on the last lap, resulting in Pett on getting off the high side. The tens ion was mounting. Petton made no mi sta kes a n d Garcia co u ld no t find a wa y arou nd . Pett on appear ed to ha ve the win sewed up as they en te red t he last turn, but Garcia somehow go t a tre mendous dri ve ou t of tum four and passed Petton as they crossed the finsih line. Michigan, ride r is b id ing h is time while h oni ng his skill s in th e Amateur ran ks until Septem ber when he turns 16 and ca n joi n th e ra nks o f the Pro-Arn s . Bigelow set a blistering pace with his SOOcc RTX in the first heat of the SOOcc class, toppi ng even the fastest Pro-Am heat with ave rage lap times of 24.22. The Mar ine Tran sport / Marshall Distribu tings-sponsored Bigelow b rough t ou t bigger ar tillery as he boarded h is H-D to face off with the Pros in the Combo, the only class cur rently in the District 14 class selection whe re he can face any real opposition. Before lap one was over Bigelow had put 10 lengths on the older riders, and he increas ed the distance stead ily to the finish line. The SOO c~ final would see Bigelow face off with Mike Babka. As the light switched to green Bab ka blasted out of the hole, lead ing the field around tu m one. Bigelow caug ht up by the back stre tch and the two d iced for a couple of lap s before Bigelow could get dear of the 39-year-old vetera n. The two wou ld even tu ally put half a track between themselves and third-place finisher Rugg Foltz, wh o cru ic;;ed across the finish line several seconds ahea d of the rest of the field . The last class of the night would come none to soon for Bigelow as he climbed back abo ard his 750 for the combo . Dou g O'Boyle squ eezed every bit of horsep ower and then some from his Rot ax t ry in g to h old o ff the tee n a ge r, b u t Big el o w w aited o n ly lon g e nough to fi n d e no u gh ro om for a clea n pass, th e n blew by O'Boyle with a flick of the wris t. The payoff for the combo may not ha ve equ aled the Pro payoff, but the racing action mat ched it lap for lap . ROSAMOND, CA;MAY 1819 Peter Chr istensen found himself in fam iliar territory whe n he cap tu red th e wi n in the Toyota Co ld Cup Formula One Road Race at the fifth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club race actio n at Willow Springs Inte rnational Racew ay. Ch ris tense n took the lead o ff th e line followed by Jerry Eva ns Jr . an d Dean Vince n t. However, Michael Montoya caug ht and passed Vincen t in the first lap 'and was all ove r Evans' rear tire comi ng down the front straight to start the second la p. Rou nding tum th ree, Mon toya manuevered around the inside of Evans, mov ing u p into secon d. As th e thi rd la p e nded, Evans was su ddenly caught and passed by bot h Chris Voelker and Paul Mum ford . The re ma ining lap s saw Christe nsen ho ld onto his lead as Montoya was never able to mo unt a cha llenge and finished second . Voelker held on to ta ke th ird . In the Form ula Two race, Mon toya rocketed off the line followed by Robbie Dowie in second and Stev e Tes chke in thi rd . Wh ile Mo nt oy a qu ickly bega n to build a secu re lead. Dow ie cam e under pressure from Teschke as the racers came out of tu m nine to comp lete the first lap. Afte r drafting Dowie, Teschke moved a rou nd a nd int o secon d . As la p two got u n de r way, Bria n Garbelli n i began to challenge Dowie for th ird and was able to get pas t him in tum thr ee. Now focused on catch ing Teschke, Ga rbelti ni spent the rema inder of the race on Teschke's tail, making several at tem p ts to pass. How ev er, thos e attempts came u p short as Teschke was able to use a slight h orsep ow er advantage to keep Carbdlini at bay. Upton flies at Antelope Valley Supercross By Greg Robertson LANCASTER, CA,MAY 18 Dona ld Upton foun d the Antelope Valley Fairgrou nds' hard -pack soil to h is liking. as he won th ree ou t of fou r motos entered to top both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes du ring round three of Full Blown Pro mo tions' So. Cal Supercross se ries. Eric Schnell pu t his Suz uki at the front of the pack as the first 125cc moto began. Brian Roth ran second with Ma rk Eas ley an d Jeff Tilt on tra iling. Up ton wa s fo rced to cl a w his way towards the fron t after a bad start. Easley passed Roth an d was d ogging Schnell for the lead by lap tw o. Up ton had worked u p to fourth, then zapped Roth in a lon g se ries of whoo ps to take - over third. Schnell and Easley gave the crowd on ha nd its money's worth as they battled for the lead all the way to the checkers with Schnell comi ng ou t on top. Upton was closing in on the battling lead d uo, but time rao out and he had to set tle for th ird over Roth and D.J. Sweany. Upton rode his Applied Racing / FMF / ZLT / MSR/ Shock Therap y-backed CRI25 to a convinci ng second -mo te win. Roth ga ted second and wou ld mai ntain the position thr oughou t the race. Some of the best racing on the track was for third among Easley, Sweany and Schnell, with Easley getting the upper hand on the last lap to secure the pos ition and take home the second p lace pu rse money over the 4-2 score of Roth. Easley holeshot the first round of 250cc Pro action but was quick ly passed by Upton on lap one. Upton slowl y p ull ed away for the win . Easley finis hed a lonely second . Sweany came from his ninth- place start to pa ss Mat Bateman on the final lap for third . Sweany's second -mote lead lasted half a lap before Upton shot p ast. Upton motored away from the field again and celebrated with a cancan o ff the fron t- st r aigh t tri p le ju m p at the chec kers, muc h to the delight of the fans.
