Mashbir slaughters Cow
Mountain Qualifier
By Bob Lockwood
LAKEPORT, CA APR. 2B
,
Eric Mashbir followed u p his second-p lace finishes of the last two years with the overall win at
the Cow Mou ntain Qualifier, located in the hills
above Gear Lake in California.
The Qualifier was a grueling 70-mile offroad even t that feature d two very techrUcal special tests an d a gra ss track and mo tocros s test
located in a freshly dis ked wal nut orchard .
Cole Marshall's big-bore four-stroke stalled
twice in the grass track, effectively putting him
out of cont ention for the overa Il win. However,
Mar shall had his bike running correctly by the
end of the Qualifier when he had the crowd on
its feet with a daz zling show as he railed every
berm and thu ndered down every straightaway
on his way to a motocross time equali ng Mash~
bir's.
Coming in from the 70-mile cours e scratc hed
and bleeding, with the right sid e of his jersey
shr edd ed, Eric Elgaaen w as favored to win the
Junior class after posting the fastest times in the
grass track and first spe cial tL>St. However, the
Honda CR250 rider ap peared to be dazed at the
star t of the motocro ss, lin ing up at the slower
outside edg e of the start, and coming off the line
midpack. Elgaaen woke up midway throughout
the second lap, moving through the pack in just
half a lap to win his motocross. Elgaaen turned
in the fou rth-best motocross time, good enough
for the overall Junior-class win . .
The Novice class stru ggled on the course at
the Benm ore Creek crossin g, whe re riders lost
critical momentum need ed to make the steep
climb up Boundary Ridge. These and other d ifficulties on the cou rse caused one-th ird of the
nov ices to gain crippling route po ints and
another th ird to hour out . Eric Calvaliere arrived
on time to all five checks and posted the fastest
times in the gras s track, second special test and
motoc ross to win the Novice class. Naomi Willis
was six minu tes late to check one, but otherwise
stayed on time, and seem ingly got faster as the
day wo re on in the special tests, to take the win
in the Women 's class.

Bronk blasts Bible
Ranch hillclimb
By Rose Parmeter
BLACK RIVER FALLS, WL MAY12
Mike Bronk blasted over the steep, rock-st rev..on
AMA District 16 hillclimb aboard hi s 1500cc
Yamaha rocket in an astou nd ing 3.15 second s,
sha llering the hill record of 3.23 at the final hillclimb to be held at Bible Ranch.
Riding another finely tuned Yamaha, Bronk
also posted a win in the 400cc class, where he
wa s the only rider to break the four-second barrier at 3.93. Runner- up Bill Timm was close
behind at an even four seconds.
The SOOcc class fea tu red a battle a mo ng
Bronk, his br oth er Matt and Rick Parmeter, aU
from Wisconsin Rap id s, Wisconsin , Both Matt
Bronk and Parmeter clocked a 3.81 for a firstplace tie after the first round, while Mike Bronk
was on their heels at 4.0L Neither Mike nor Matt
could better their times in the second half, leaving it wide open for Panneter, who came back
with a 3.71 for the glory . Mall was second, Mike
third .
No one else in District 16 hilId imbing has a
greater following than Open-class Harley ride r
Chuck Neinfe ldl, and part of the reason for this
is h is wil d yet winn ing style. Throughout the
day the fastest lines were on the hill's left side,
away from the huge rock ledge in the cen ter of
the h ill. Bu t Nei n feldt lined up at the bo ttom
with the boulder dead -ahead, and to the delight
and awe of the crowd, he head ed straigh t for it.
Nein feld t launched perfectl y ove r it, la nded
straigh t on the rock 's face, and motored on to
the top. Neinfeld t's air time slowed his time to
4.11, far beh ind leader Mike Bronk. The crowd
loved it though, and when Neinfeld t came back
for his second allempt, he was cheered on to the
victory, just edging out Bronk's 3.30 with a spectacular ride of 3.26.
The 750cc class wa s exciting for Jay Parm eter, who begins the season with a '96 KTM SSO.
With recent suspension and moto r mods to the
already powerful bike, Panneter easily took the
7SOcc-class title with his ride of 4.01 seconds .
