Fisherfittest at Evolution MX By Helen Wheales MUDDY CREEK, TN,MAY5 When round fou r of the Evol ution Series came to Muddy C reek Ra cew a y, Greg Ca rter and Dave Fishe r scored imp ress ive wins in the 500 and 250cc Mast er classes respectively, while Wayne Nix bested the Sportsman ranks. The first-mote action got under way wi th a tight firs t-corner tussle. As the clus ter rounded the be nd, Gary Kop tak squi rted into the lead. The position wa s quickly relinqu ished to Rick Doughty as the pack hit a section of high -speed jumps. The order remained constant for the first one and a half revolutions. Carter, however, was on a mission. After displacing a very wide K~ tak , he set his sights on Do ughty. Wit hi n th e clos ing yards of lap two he mad e his move to the lead. Doughty retalia ted by repassing ove r Mu dd y Creek's fa med tabl etop ju mp . Carter 's experie nce with deep-rutted co mers proved to be just the asset he needed. to cash in on the lead with the very next tum. While Doughty struggled with front brake problems, Carter pulled ou t to a comfortable margin . Farther back, the effervescent style of Dave Fisher allowed him to float to the top of the 250cc Mast er divis ion. Fisher con tin ue d his charge all the way up to Carter's back doo r. Ca rter mad e sure to slam the door on Fish er, effectiv ely locking him ou t of the top spot in moto one. At the flag it was Carter in the 500cc Master class, Fisher in the 250cc Masten; and Nix as first250cc Sportsman. Moto two looked like it would go Greg Ca r ter ' s way a s he g rabbed the ea rly lead . Doughty's Maico bogged off the gate relegating him to the back, but after four turns he had pulled into second be h in d Carter. The two remained close for the first two la p s before Carter pulled clear .
