Tucker takes another at
Lawton Cross Country
By Mike Conne ll
OKLAHOMA CITY. OK, MAY12

Chris Tu cker won his third race in a row at the
fifth rou nd of the Oklaho ma Cross Coun try circui t. held at Lawton Motorcycle Park.
Tucker is in such a groove now , nearin g the
mid point o f the se aso n, tha t h is chances of
d up licating his 1994 overall championship look
great. Whlc he smoothly mo tors aw ay, the rest
of the Expert class is left to ride over their heads
ju st to see h is dust occasi onall y.
The Lawton track w as the sho rtest loo p so
far this seas on. meas uring slightly less than five
miles . The track includ ed 5everal fast woods sec·
tion s, complete \\;th so lid rail berms throughou t. Ou tside of the woods were terr aced, gras sy
straightaways tha t ad ded a mot ocross fla"'or to
the race. As has been the case at most races, the
track was d ry and du sty, but a cool w ind helped
keep the d us t blown off the trail. The sho rt track
lengt h made lap ped traffic the ord er of the da y
wi th so me ride rs be in g lap ped tw o or th ree
times.
Will PL'fI'}' put his 250 into the Expcrt-elass
lead with th e rest of th e class close ly bu nched
up behi nd him. Perry 's lead lasted for less than
one lap , though, whe n he got cross-ru tted and
wen t down hard . By the time he recovered, the
entire class had go tten by. Tuck er took over at
that poin t an d seized the chance to have a clear
track and no d us t. Billy Spu rl ock , on a borrowed XR600, soon moved into secon d and set·
tied into one of his best ride s of the season. As
the race worc on, he got more comfortable on
the big four-s troke and actua lly closed ground
on Tuc ker in the later stages of the race. Tucker
would take the flag sligh tly less than a min ute
ahead of Spurlock. Chri s Griffin spc nt most of
the race all alone in third and stayed there until
the en d, finish ing alm ost four minu tes beh ind
Spu rlock.

By Jay and Sharon Hauser

Str ong wi nd s kept rid ers fightin g to stay on
cou rse du ring round five of the U.S. Eastern ProAm Mo tocr o ss Sprin g S ~ri e s a t Pr o -Spor t
Motocr oss Park, bu t just as the winds staye d
strong all da y so did jim Neese, ridi ng to first
overall in bot h Pro di visions.
Neese looked to have his work cut out for him
as he di dn't pull too good of a start in the first
mota of 250cc Pro action. That honor fell to Trov
Bn.WL'f. Brewer led the field of Shane Temp leton.
'
Jamie Frazier and Terry Ken nedy while Ch ris
Anstead and Scott Shipley fought it out for the top
five. ccse was quick to work up irom his cighthplace start and wa" immediately blowing pa..t one
rider after another. Brewer held the lead un til lap
two when Neese - the only rider to dear this section of quad jumps - leaped past Brewer and said
goodbye. Brewer remained in the runner-up spot
to th E" chE"ckers wh ile Fraz ier, Templeton a nd
Kennedy also held the top five places in that order,
with Shipley taking a soil sample back to eighth .
Next time out Neese shot his CR250 out iront
at the drop of the gate and set it on cruise control
as he walked aw ay from the pack. Brewe r kept
him in sight for abou t a lap till he felt the heavy
pressure being ap plied by Frazier's Kawasaki for
the run ner -up spo t. Templeton wa settled into
..
fou r over 16-year-Ve Donovan in tum four of the last lap
and both hit the wan . Donovan was able to walk
a w a y bu t Hanna h was carried off w it h the
n.1"'rt coming back tha t he had a badly broken
elbow .
In the Han d icap Main, Paul Colston cha rged
from the 20-yard line an d hit the comer first, bu t
it was Brad Oxley and Ed Castro who had a reales ta te di spute and ende d up in the turn~tw o
wall. Castro was able to get u p under his own
steam but Oxley wasn't as lucky as he had disloca te d h is kn ee . Cast ro w a s out a s he wa s
dee med the cause of the accident and Oxley was
too injured to restart. On th e restar t Co lston
agai n hit the turn first. Aden, Gary Hicks an d
Lucero were running three abrea st bu t by lap
two had sorted things ou t and it was Aden who
too k a com ma n d in g lead . H icks, Lucero and
Sea n McConnell were runn ing tw o, th ree and
fou r. By the end Aden had at leas t a five-bikeleng th lea d . Hicks held o ff Lucer o for seco nd
and Lucero kep t McConn ell at bay for third .
