Bluegrass Motocross
debut a success
By Joe Tr ott er
Q.A Yan, KY, APR. 27-28

When Gerry Yeiser decided to relocate his suec<'Ssful Winchester, Kentucky , track. he only had
to look down the Moun tain Parkway in to neigh ·
bori ng Clay City to find the pe rfect loca tion.
Cl ay C ity , Ke nt uc ky , (a .k .a "Race City ")
alrea dy offere d a drag stri p, stock car raceway
a n d a ka r t tra ck . It was on ly n at u r al for a
motocross track to be the latest ad dition, and on
April 27, Yeiser's "Bluegrass Motocross" opened
its d oors in a big way.
Nes tled among trees and laid ou t across flat
fannland, the one-mile mo tocross has an ideal
location. The 12-aere layou t is neighbored by the
local dr ag strip and kart track on a 4O-acre racing com plex, so riders can make as much noise
and kick up as much dirt as they would like.
Even th ough th e track has been a work in
p ro gr ess, rid ers fro m across th e reg ion have
tre kke d into town to take a few p ractice ru ns on
the course. Practice is fine, bu t on April 27, over
100 ride rs wer e ready to race. The pu rple silk
ribb o n had bare ly been cut by loca l officials
before the ride rs were ou t in numbers, slinging
dirt and read y to sink their tread into the virgin
tra ck.
Showe rs th at ha d covered the area in th e
even ing m ade way for su nny skies on race day
as th e track appea red to be in top condition. The
sprawling track offered riders a superb balance
of hills, tu rns to keep the races tight, while offering enough open ground to make sure riders
could capture plenty of air .
One of the biggest races of the day was an
afternoon battle that developed in the 250cc C
class between J.L. Osbourne and Darrell Reddix.
Os bourne wa s able to grab the holeshot, but it
was only eno ugh to give him a sligh t edge on
Reddix, who was hot on his hee ls as the d uo left
the pa ck behind .
Redd ix see med to have an advantage on the
jumps an d was able to pa ss Osbourne on th e
second lap . It was now Osb ourne's tum to ap ply
the press u re, and he was able to reca pture the
lead . Reddix was rid ing a KTM tha t had pro ven
to be a wi n ne r for othe r rid er s an d it wo uld
serve him just as well as he was ab le to regain
the lead in the final laps for the w in.
Reddix won both motos and also captured
first p lace in the 25+ C divi sion ea rlie r in the
day.
~ Larr y Gessner also made th e best ope ning
weekend. After winning first place in the 125cc
A and the 2S+ classes on Saturday, Gessn er was
back out at the track on Sunday to try and keep
his ru n going.
In the first mot o of the 125cc A class, Gessner
present ed a strong ride but the Hoosier fou nd
hi mself on t he losin g en d of a du el for first
agai nst Rodney Carr ier. In the seco nd m ota it
was pay back time as Gess ner took the win with
eno ugh beh in d him to claim th e ove ra ll first
place awa rd.
