Benton hammers Rim Bender Cross Country By Darryl Smith M ONTAGUE, TX, APR. 21 Round five of the Texas Cross Country ser ies returned to the Whitaker ranch near Mont ague where Irving Yama ha /Team Pract ice Racing 's Gary Benton dominated the AA Expert class. The start was held in a deep sandy field with a quick left-hander follow ed by a jump. Benton continu ed his d ominance of the start by round ing the first tum in front of the other 11 AA riders . Benton and Tom Rob in son had lined up wa y to the ins ide in more solid grou nd and it mad e the d ifferen ce as the tw o swept into the lead. Robinson edg ed by Benton tw ice in the first tw o straights, but th at was the only time Benton would be challenged . The Rim Bender course ge ts its name from being brutally fast and rough, bu t you could tell Bent on wa s having fun 'as he tripled throu gh whoop sections and stretched ou t a tw o-minute lead before he had to pit. At the end of the five 1D-mile loops, Benton took the checkers three minutes ahead of Robinson, who rod e alone in second while David Cu lpepper earned third one minute behind Robinson. The 30+ Expert rac e and ov era ll win were decided by a little bad lu ck. Dan a Wrigh t got the jump at the start whi le David Koontz wo rked up from back of the pack. For three laps they were never more th an a few seco nds a pa rt. Koontz mad e a pass on lap three but Wright blew back by him imme diately . Koontz began to fade late in the race, stiB suffering from th e effects of a sore wrist from a crash at the previous rou nd. Wright enjoyed a 3D-secon d lead head ing into the final lap, bu t that ended two miles from the finish line whe n his Suzuki RMX ran out of gas. A surprised Koontz rod e by as Wright was refueling. The class win and Overall Expert honors were handed to Koontz while Wright got his bike started in time to hold onto second.
