Stoffers stuffs Turlock MX
By Dick Arche r
lURLOCK, CA, APR. 28
Pau l Stoffers came fro m behind to win both
motes and the series overall in the 250cc Beginners div ision at the fifth and final round of Amp
Racing's '96 Spring Series in Tu rlock. Stoffers
led series-long nemesis Jamey Parker by a mere
one point going into moto one .
As the stamped e left the gate, Parker jumped
ahea d of Stoffers, Chris Ribeiro, Joe CampiJIi
and Bub Monaco. By lap thr ee Parker and Stoffers had raced away wit h the lead. Wh eel-towheel they crossed the finish-line jump with one
lap to go. Stoffers tracked Parker's lines, keeping
w ith h is every m o ve . Th en Parker ever-sobriefly bobbled and Staffers was there to capitalize . He slipped by Parker and da sh ed to the
chec kered flag. Parker tried to reel h im in but
cam e u p shor t by a few seconds .
Moto two was a d o-or-di e situa tion as "they
bot h neede d the win to take the series overa ll.
The gate drop ped and off they went. Cresting
the first turn first were Par ker and Stoffers in an
elbow-to· elbo w frenzy o f speed , a nd ju st
beh ind , Ca m pilli, Ribeiro, and Dan Mend oza
fighting for third . Parker took off with the lead
but Stoffers ag a in stayed d anger ously close,
lea"ing Par ker very litt le breathing room . Lap
after lap Stoffers poun ded away at Par ker, challenging him in every corner. Finally Stuffers got
by Parker, only to be repassed in the next comer.
But Sto ffers plowe d by him once agai n in the
following corner and took the lead for good .
Stoffers moto red on for the win and the series
overall. A crestfallen Parker took second, and
Ribeiro finished third.
Dustin Bloom field split victory in the 125
and 250cc Pro divisions with series rival Pat
Gomm winning the 125cc class on 2-1 finishes.
The two were all over each other throughout
both motos, but Bloo mfield kept up a furio us
pace in moto two that Camm could do nothing
abou t. Gomm won the 250cc class with a dubious second -mota victory. Bloomfield won the
first moto, and led moto two all the way into the
last comer when Gomm made his move. Using
Bloomfield as a berm, he railed off him and
mad e the pass as Bloomfield went tumbling
head over heels to the ground. Gomm took the
win, Bloomfield quickly remoun ted and finished
second. Bloomfield's secon d in the 250cc class
and win in the 1255 gave h im the well-deserved
series wins in both di visions.
