Hutchins hauls at Carlsbad Vintage Motocross By Donald McGregor Photo by Donn ie Staman CARlSBAD CA APR. 14 , , Ma rk Hutch ins gave Bultaco fa ns rea son to cheer as his Pur sang took the overall win in the Over 40 In term ed iate class at Carlsbad Raceway. The Carlsbad tradition of dose, exciting racing continued as over 100 vintage racers con verged on the specially prepared track. Hutch ins jum ped ou t 'to an early lead in mot o one. Montesa-rnounte d Steve Sabin gav e chase, but in the final laps Hutchins tu rned it up a di ck, pulli ng aw ay for the win. Moto two saw Sabin come to the line with a new-fo un d d eterm ina tion, and wh en the ga te dropped he chase d Hutchins to the first comer, d eli gh ti n g the crowd wit h th e two -m a n ho lesho t. As the race pr ogre ssed, the pai r continued to battle tooth and nail, neither givi ng an inch. In the closi ng lap s, Hut chins once aga in turned it up and pulled awa y for a I -I finis h and the overall win. In 250cc Sp o rt sman ac tio n, In termed iat eclass ph enom Dave Hellick used an outs ide line in tu rn one of the firs t mot o, blowin g by th e pack on his beauti ful CZ and going on u nchallenged to a first-mote win . As the group line d up for moto two, every ey~ was on Hellick, wond er ing if the sa me b anzai move would w ork tw ice. As th e gate dropped , every racer had th e same idea, circling outside in tum one, seemingly in unison . Hellick wen t wide r still, almos t taking a sectio n of fence and once again swoo ping the pac k for an incred ible hol esh ot. One man who was not going to let Hellick get away, however, was Exper t-class Maico rid er Rick Price. Hellick and Price stretched out a hu ge lead , each pu shing the othe r to faster lap tim es. Th e pair rode lik e they we re chai ne d tog ether, n ever mor e th an a bike length apa rt. Holt holds on at Barona Short Track By Wayne Hosaka RAMONA, CA, APR. 13 Brad Holt sco red h is seco nd consecutive 250cc Pro mai n-even t win when he took top honors in the class du ring Satu rday nig ht short track racing at Barona Speedway. Thou gh a few of the regula r hotshoes were out of tow n competing at the AHRMA /Eddie Mulder Vintage races at Willow Springs , the Pro main s ha d the 2000 specta tors sitting in the stands and pa rty iJ:tg on the boulders along the back straig ht going bonkers. The 250cc Pro Main event ha d Holt taking the lead ea rly wit h Garcia followi ng. The Bultaco was working grea t on the 1/6th-mile banke d d irt oval, and by the hal fway mark Holt had a substan tial lead . Ronn ie Garcia put on a charge and closed to withi n five bike lengths with five of the 16 laps to go, but he tired and lost contact with Holt. Steve Gorby ra n a consisten t third with Pat Dwy er in fourth. The order remain ed the same with Holt first, Garcia second , Gorby th ird, and Dwyer fou rth . . The Op en Pro Main eve nt was a bam -burn er from the start. Robbie No lin led early followed by Garcia, Holt and Mar k Arago n. Travis Petton worked from a back-row sta rt u p to fifth place . by the second lap . By lap five, Pelion had moved past Arago n, Ho lt, and Gar cia an d was setting up Nol in for a pass. The next two lap s had the fans on their feet as Petton wo uld take the lead only to h ave No lin repass in the next tu m . As the lead ers bega n lapping the slower rid ers, Holt joined the fray. Pet ton slow ly pulled ahead as Nolin got caugh t in tra ffic. Holt used the traffic mas terfu lly an d got a rou nd Nolin for secon d. Nolin would repass on the straightaway only to have Holt use his 20 years exerience on the Bul~ taco to squ eeze th rough tr affic a nd retake the position. With four la ps to go , the spectators were goin g wild when the two entered tum one sid e by side, Nolin-on the ins id e. Holt wisel y lifted, settling for third.
