Dave Rohrschneider was the top Expert in the
first District 17 triaJs even t of the season, held at
Buffalo Range.
Located just west of Ottawa, Buffalo Rang e
is a commercial riding area that covers 400 acres
of diverse terrain. The site features a 4O-acre
sand p it, sandstone cliffs, waterfalls and rockstrew n creek beds, as well as the traditional
Northern illinois mud and logs.
Sunday' s event took advantage of all of the
features the site offered. Section number on e
was near the parking lot and used the steep hills
surro un d ing the sand pit Section two was near
a spectacular 4O-foot waterfall, using some rock,
logs, and mud made fresh during the previous
da y's sho we r. The section pr oved more challenging for all classes than was expected . Section
three took the Novice, Enduro, and Vintage rid ers up a relatively dry creek bed . The Intermedi.ates and Experts rode a nearby part of the same
cre e k bed that starte d ne ar a n o the r 3D foo t
waterfall and ended with an undercut rock step.
Only Roh rschneid er consi stently cleaned th e
rock step. Rohrschneider was still fresh from his
California National rid e, where he finish ed first
in the Senior (30-34) class wi th onl y on e point
for the whole eve t.
n
Section five took all classes over seve ral logs.
However, the last d oubl e-st ep log was unique,
a nd ha d the In termed ia te and Expert ride rs
doing nose d ives.
Sections six thr ough I I go t the riders to the
really good stuf f. A boul der-strewn creek, lined
with san ds tone cliffs, with rushing cold sp ring
water, challenged the best
Section 13 must be unique to Buffalo Range.
A sandstone cliff has eme rged in the pit where
the fine, white silica sa nd was mined around it
A section was laid out that requ ired the rid ers to
climb vari ous parts o f the cliff after turning in
the very loose sand. The sa nd was particularly
aggravating. taking points from everyone during attempts to tu m sharply in order to acceler ate towards the steps in the cliff.
