r and Colomer just walked away from the opposi ti on . Colomer, despite looking worried about his machine an d ha ving sev eral earnest di scu ssions with team manager Miguel Chera (who suddenly didn't understand English when questioned!) about the bike, actually brought his op ening sco re down by one m ar k from the previou s da y. Lamp kin posted just two more despite a scare at sections four and five when he s u ddenly dropped two Ss. . Behind th ese two there was vi rtu al carnage as no one else could live with the d eteriorated cond itions . But then the light rai n stopped and a d ry ing wind soon had d u st blow ing from the sec tions. Lamp kin and Colomer resp onded ins tan tly an d went at that last lap like .. the sections we re actually easy . Colomer was rid ing first of th e duo and he posted an extraordinarily low score of just 12 ma rks lost with eight clean rides. But Lampkin was unbelievable, coming in with just eight marks on his punch-eard. It was a remarkable perform ance, and Colomer was the first to congratulate Lampkin. "I was very happy with 12 on the last lap ," Colomer explained. "I was riding very well, but Doug was even better. He deserves to win , and I am happy to be second." The young Brit was understandably exited about his win. "In Spain last week I think I gave up concentrating on the last lap and lost those three stupid 5s that cost me second place," said Lampkin. "I was not going to do the same again. I was confident of actually cleaning the lot. That is what I went out to do on the last lap - just clean every section. I felt like I was on top of them all weekend." Behind the leading duo it was every man for himself. Fifty marks separated Lampkin from third-place Camozzi, but less than 30 separated Camozzi from 15th finishe r and final points scorer Tomoyuki Ogawa. And in the midst of the points scorers, in a lowly eighth place , came a sadlooking reigning world ch amp Jordi Tarres, who looked a pale shadow of his former dominating self. One simple statistic tens the story - Doug Lampkin posted 21 cleans out of 42 sections, while Iordi managed just five. The man ~. who had for a decade controlled every single World Championship round, producing brilliant clean after brilliant clean, could barely keep his feet on the pegs. All around seven-time champ Tarres, the young guns were shooting from the hip. [ustribo, who concentrated on winning the European Championship last year, sud denly looked a real threat with his fi nal loop score of 21. Ja rv is also saved his best score for the end when he posted 25. Hawkstone Park Hawkstone Park, Great Britain Results: Ap ril 20-21, 1996 CHAMPIONSHIP: 1. Do ug Lamp kin (Bet) 52; 2.
