Sandhill has been denied it's -permit to continue to ho ld raci ng eve nts. Currently under a pp eal th e ou tcome may close the facility, which has been ho lding races for over 23 years. "I' m sure we will be given a permit eventually," ow ner Tom Anderson said. "But I cou ld really use the help and support of the pu blic." Despite the clouds overhea d , the Tritook racer s up and d own, over hills and boulders and around and on top of logs. Each of the sections had four lines laid out wi thin it. The line was decided by the expertise of the rider, with level one bein g the most difficu lt (Exp ert), . two (Intermediate), thr ee (Ama teur) and four (Novice or Beginner). The variet y bikes kept the watching as interesting as the riding . There was ev ery thing from a Cotton to a H onda and in between - big four-strokes to little two-strokes, all running one right after the other in a very polite fashion. Ken Hatch riding a Bultaco tied with Way ne Sumner o n a Su zuki in th e Senior Class. Ha tch and Sumner both had six points and both rode 25 clean sec tions, but Hatc h too k t h e win beca use h e was six years older th a n Sum ner. John Ford rode his Greeves to a perfect sco re in the Premier Lightweigh t Novice class, topping West Coast British rid er Mike Green, who encountered problems with a narrow gap bet w een two large rocks on the third course. "Putting-l!"ur foot down equals one point," Green explained. "So on ce it's down you might as well keep it there." Five poi nts were earned if you missed your line. Darr el Johnson rode his Roya l Enfie ld to a firs t-place fini sh over Dan Wilso n on a BSA in the Prem ier Heavyweight Novice class. Fred Mark finished just one poin t behind Wilson . "It ' s th e me mory that go es fi rs t, " Mork said wi th a laugh after he rode his Royal Enfield on line fou r instead of line three in a particular ly tricky spot in the third section on his second time through the course. The Mod em Classic Novices we re a tou gh gro up. Five riders finished w ith a per fect score, age bein g the deciding factor . Bill Row , 46, bea t out Rich Yarnne, 40. Rick Doughty took the wi n in both m o to s and overall in the Spo rtma n Open Twin Expert class desp ite leavin g a fend er behind on the last comer in the first rnoto, Bill Knight earned a second overall with a 2-3 finish and Mike Van Liende n came in third. Rand y Lewis topped 197 3 Honda 250-mo un ted Mickey Fay in bo th motos to take fi rs t in th e Sportsman 250cc Expert class on his '74 Rickman VR25O. Greg Carter finished third on a '74 Montesa 250. Bill Knight rode his '74 Norton 850 to a win in bo th m o to s over Ken n et h Corpe:on a '57 BSA AlO in the Premier Open Twin Expe rt ranks. Knigh t nearly lost it in th e ro ugh track on th e fro nt straightaway in th e firs t moto as the track conditions deteriorated. The fi nal ra ce of th e day was th e "Czecho Race." Zoli Beren yi bested Bill Row in the Expert class. Ryan Dickson took th e w in over Fred Mark in t h e Intermediate class and Bill Staley stayed ah ead of Jane t Borg to wi n the Novice class.
