But Albritton mana ged to grab the early adv antag e in the second moto of the Schoolboy class, riding the Honda as if his pan ts were on fire. East ern Pro-Am Sprin g Series rou nd three d oubl ehead er at the Devil's Ridge Mot ocross facility. The Horton broth ers rolled in from Georgia and kicked tail, with Robbie turning in a perfect four-mota sweep. Richie Horton took the runner-up spot by finishing no worse than third in any of his moto s. Robbi e wa s ju st ab out untou chabl e in the 12Scc A dass, but Richie was hit with some real presure. Mitchell Hodges ran a couple of stro ng mot os to tak e third. Sou th Carolin a's Chuck Shi rley came h om e in fou rth with a 3-6 sco re ove r Troy Brewer. Robbie agai n waltzed away with bot h moto wins in 250cc A racing with only h is brother able to giv e h im a figh t. The best racing of the da y was in 250cc A moto two as Richie gra bbed the holeshot and looked as if he were going to pu t a stop to his br oth er' s win streak, holdi ng down first for the first two lap s. Local favorite Patrick Slate was keeping d ose to the lead pair in hopes of not gelling left behind. Robbie was soon past for the lead and set sail for the checkers, while Richie ran into trouble with a stalled motor in a sh arp rig ht-han der, whi ch let Slat e cree p right up on his rear fend er at the halfway point. Slate tried eve ry trick in the book to make a move on Hort on bu t still came up inches short at the fall of th e flag. Brew er pu lled out a fourth w hile H odges.captured fifth overall. Rising Mini rid er Jered Black has been turing some heads lately with some blazing-fast rid ing . in the 80cc (12-15) and Supermini d ivi son s . Team Calamari's Jerry Dougl as rode to victory in the NCMRRA Vet-Gass Mini Road Race h eld at Prairie Oty SVRA. The field of Vet rid ers consisting of Op en and Mod ified classe s sw ep t th ro ug h the first tum behind Douglas, all jockeying for po sition. Racers Pat Hu sh and Mark Cozzen s followed Dou glas closely, as they too wer e on Open -elass bikes. Modifi ed-dass racer Geoff Eppes carried cons istent spee d to battle early on with Op enclass racer Michael Lynn while coming under constant pressure from the rest of the Modi fied class. While Doug las was checking out and cru ising away, a tight battle developed between Hu sh and Cozzens for second place. The tw o racers were nip and tuck thr ough most sections of the course . Both Cozz ens and Hush carri ed similar speed down the front straightaway leading into tum number one, a. fast left-hander . Hush, ridin g a water-cooled 80cc YSR, wou ld try the outsi de line aro und Cozze ns in tum one for the first four laps. On lap number five, as the pair of rid ers exited tum four and head ed toward s tum five, it wo u ld b e H us h lead ing up th e h ill to. t h e corksc re w, this tim e without Cozzens . After ov e rs h oo ti n g a n d cras h ing in th e co rn e r, Cozz ens wo uld rem ount and h old d own th ird position. The Open -class positions w ould remain the same as the more powerful bikes would start lap ping the Modified dass on abou t lap number seven. Modi fied action had Eppes lead ing Bill Hackett, Art Martinez and Deon Perry in a close race for the top three class positions. The fou r-ride r battle wo uld last un til the late stage s of the race. Martinez gave Hackett a run for second while coming un de r consistent pressu re from Stock-bike rider Pe rry . Perry passed Charles Tsegeletos at mid race and could only p ress u re Ma rtinez for thir d in the tighte r sections of the cou rse. Martinez wou ld pu n away from Perry on the stra ights and nip at Hackett who had his hand s full wit h Eppes. As the race wo un d dow n it was Eppes' h igh er cor ne r speeds w hich ke p t Hackett a t bay. When th e checkere d flag flew it wa s Douglas and Eppes finishing first in thei r respective classes. APR.7 Comeback kid Kevin Walker is back in the racing groove aft er a seve n-mo n th layoff, and he proved it by nailing three overall wins at round three of th e AM A / Teen o sel Ca roli na Ult ra Seri es a t th e Ca they's Cre ek circu it where a record entry of 390 riders enjoyed long -awaited su nshi ne, although an u ns easonably cool. stiff breeze qu ickly dried out the track. Walker won eve ry m oto of t he 125cc A, 250cc A and 25+ A classes. The YZ pilot collected $400 for his fun in 125 and 250cc A d ivisions plus another $70 for the 25+ A win courtesy of Carolina Scrap Processors. "I told him it would be about a month after he sta rted rid ing again. before he wou ld go back to win ning like before," gri nn ed Walker's wife, Tracie. . Ind eed, Walker has experienced a slum p of sorts since his shattered collar bon e healed, finishing in the top five but not always the victor. In all six of his motos, Walk er holeshot the sta rt and led every lap , lea ving the battl es for p osition to tho se beh ind. Billy Liles and Brian McElroy provid ed the m ost action with eve rfaster, sid e-by-sid e racing un til McElroy's wrist acted up . Hon da-m ounted Jon Boruff took the win in both the 125 and 250cc B divisions against some of the best Intermediate rid er s in the region . Boruff tra ded moto w ins in th e 12Scc B dass with Marcus Hedrick. In the first round, Jason Thompson grabbed the holesh ot and fought off Hed rick's challenges until th e last lap, when Hedrick powered past to take the lead . Thompson ran out of time at the flag and settled for secon d . Boruff stalled in the first turn an d wa s forced to claw hi s wa y b ack fro m 15th to a respectable fo urt h be tween Brian Lan e and Phillip Ha yes. Boruff gated mu ch b etter in th e se con d rou nd of 12Scc B action, sitting in third behind Josh Capps and Shan!, Lawson . By the halfway p oint, Boruff had passed both Capps and lawson. and practically proceeded to leave the ZlP code . Hedri ck was delayed at tum one by a pileup involving most of the first-moto top -five. No rid er fin ish ed in the sa me p ositi on for both rou n ds, and the wi ld shakeu p gave Boruff the win w ith a 4-1 score .
