Starwest Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA. APR. 6 Cale Wallace pushed his Axo-backed Yamaha to a d ouble -mo te victory during Saturday night racing at Starwest Supercross Par k. Wallace fou nd traction on the concrete starting pad and pu lled the holesho t during the first moto of the BOcc (9-11) d ivision . Daniel Taft, however, ga ted poorly and later fell while trying to catch Wallace. " I th in k I can bea t Cale, " sa id Ta ft. "I ju st have to sta rt out w ith him ." Hea ley fell victim to a poor start du ring th e ope ning 30+ No vice mot o bu t stea d ily worked his way toward s the front . Lead ing the race was Ron Mowry on his Kawasaki. Healey spe nt most of the 12 laps jumping over, cutting under and sliding past th e field, and just when he caught Mowry, the whi te flag waved. Mow ry blocked Healey on the fina l circuit a nd posted the moto win while Mar k Sandz imier finis hed a dis tant third in fron t of Rob Smith and Steve Reeves who com pleted the top five. The second m ot o saw Hea ley cha se d own and pass Mowry for the mo to an d overall victory, which in a nutshell settled the issue of who was the fastest vet of the day. Hea ley returned later an d han d led th e 35+ Novice division as well by way of a d oub le moto victory where he to pped Robe rt Pfetzing and Dave Fava . Once agai n Don Upton proved he is the king of Perris with his victory in the com bined Pro class. Fitzhugh, Holford fast at Elma DT Championship By Clay Light EL\IA, WA, APR. 6 Nation al number 49 Ch ris Fi tz h ugh pu t th e hammer d own on th e Expe rt class a nd came away with a win at the final round of the E1ma Ind oor Short Track Series in the Elma Pavilion. In the Exp ert class, Troy Rose and Mickey Fay were the heat -race winners, but in the final, Fitzhugh, wh o rid es a Yamaha, pulled out to an ea rly lead and held it for th e duration whil e Rose and Pay -batt led for second . Fay then hit a slick spot and crashed wh ile attem p ting to go insid e of Rose. allow ing Eric Rickman to settle into third, and that was the final finishi ng order. Fay carved his wa y th ro ug h the pack from 10th to fourt h to fin ish one s po t a hea d of Jason Ende rso n. Also joinin g Fitzhu gh in the winner's circle wa s Pro-Am rider Jeff Holford , who in his class d ebut, p ulled off the upset of the season. Holford led the IO-ride r, IS-lap Pro-Am fina l from sta rt to fini sh for a wi n a head of Todd Hagmann , Ma rk Patt erson , Bob Moran and Christian Vernon. Such was Tim Mitchell's case in th e 40+ class.
