Tucker used the dust to his advantage as he
took the early lead. Had he ever looked back, he
would have seen the bulk of the Expert class self
d estructing. Hard-charging Billy Spurlock managed to smash his rear tire on the firs t lap and
was thr ough for the day. The next rider to exit
was Michael Hu lsey after he crashed hard in a
rocky, wh ooped -o ut section . Will Perry's 125
developed engine tr ouble early and left h im
walking ba ck to the pits. The ben eficiaries of all
this were Bobby So ut ha rd a n d Texan Frank
Shac klee . Southard pu t in a strong ride finishing
two minutes be hi nd Tucker, a nd Shac klee finished a distant third.
Th e Over 30 Expert class was one of the most
com petit ive of the da y. John Da vis ex ited th e
first tum in th e lead , but Mike Sullivan too k the
point ~ few mil es o ut and was go ne . Sulli van
fini shed only o ne mi n u te ba ck o f Tucker on
adjusted tim e. Davis con tinued o n to finish second, so me two minutes behind Sulli van , while
Louis Blackw ell passed Robert Cros lin for third
less than a mile fro m the finish . In all, seven rid ers from this class fin ished in the top 10.
