atSRA Grand Prix
By Mike Bierman
CARlSBAD, CA MAR 31
,
Mike Sh oemaker took all the p oin ts, all the
glor y, a nd a ll the go ld during th e So ut h la nd
Racing Association Grand Prix at Car lsbad Raceway.
Shoemaker entered thr ee classes and swe p t
all with time to spare. Starting in the morning
wi th the Yet Expert class , it was obvious that
Sh oemake r w as th e re to m ai nt ain th e SRA
poin ts lead in the pop ula r Vet battl e. Finishing
in the runner-up spo t was 1995 champion Greg
Foun tain. Following Fountain were Chi p Morton, Ch ad Blou gh , a nd Joe Bagn ascc , in that
orde r. Firs t ama teur acr oss the line wa s Brian
Fountain. This marks Brian's last ride as an a mateur, as he advan ces to the Expert rank.
Shoemaker's next class was the always-fun
SRA Carlsbad team race, w here he tea med with
1995Open-class cha m p Cra ig Adams.
The sta rt of the team race pla ces the da y's
fastest rid er s .cn the front row of the four-r ow
starting grid. Rounding the last tum of the first
lap elbow- to-elbow were Shoemaker and Brian
Meyerscough. Shoemaker was a bit quicker in
hand ing the armband to his teamm ate. Adams
dashed into the lead an d was never to be headed. Second at the finish was the tea m of Meyerscough and Bob Maxwell, followed by the Fountain bro thers. Fourth we n t to Eric Smi th and
Paul Vogelsang. and roun d ing out the top five
were Tracy Mont erone and Keith Loonsfoo t.
Shoemaker's third event wa s the last race of
the d ay, the 250cc and Four-Strok e class combined . Shoem aker once again lined them up and
knocked them d own . Shoemak er had a little
compan y during the first stages of the race from
Eu ropean Zemen Arnost. H ow ev er, Arn ost
couldn't match the leader's pace and finished a
few seconds back - not bad for a first-tim e rid e
at the demanding ven ue.
