Asher tops vets at Glen Helen GP By Greg Robe rtso n SAN BERNARDI."JO, CA, MAR. 31' Jerry Asher emerged victorious in the Vet Novice class during the first round of California Racing Club's ann ual Tri-Race Series, the Golden Bear Grand Prix, held at Glen Helen Raceway. Mike DeStefano grabbed the early lead from the dead-engine start and was soon being pressured by Asher, Walt Bennett and Mike Dunlap. Asher wasted little time and made his way to the front of the pack 'by lap two with Dunlap hot on his heels. The ensuing battle for the lead between Asher and Dunlap had them slowly pulling awa y from third- place Benn ett, who had his han ds full holding off DeStefano and Darre ll Sanders . Ten m inute.... in to the 45-minute race, Du nlap ma de his way past Asher for the top spot. Asher wasn' t giving up that easily and got back around Dun lap a couple of laps later. Once out front again, Ash er wo u ld inch away from Du nlap as they worked through groups of lapped riders during the second half of the race. Bennett faded back to finish an even tual seventh. allov..:ing DeStefano to rou nd ou t the top three at the checkers . Rick Jurado kep t charging the en tire 45-minutes from his midpack start and passed Sanders late in the race for a well-deserved fourth . Orey Dircks was untouchable in th e Vet Expert-Pro class. The Hond a CRSOO-mounted Dircks used his horsepower advantage on the very fast course to walk away with the biggest portion of the 200-perce ntpayback. YZI25 rid er Eric Casas put in a fantas tic opening-lap charge, comi ng from a last-p lace sta rt all the way u p into second place, where he woul d stay to finish ahead of Scotty Walker and Matt Tedder. Ron O ement got by fast star ter Steve Dalton to claim the Vet Interm ediate win . Dean Ostrand er also wo rked up from a disastrous sta rt to fin ish in th e runne r- u p p osi t io n ove r Da ve Simon, Dalton and Randy Wilkins . Results . P /W (1)-6): 1. T.A. WalkeT (yam) ; 2.
