Co yote Raceways had worked hard to please riders and specta tors ali ke with ne w cha nges both on a nd o ff the track. Ove r 275 ride rs had participa ted in the morning progra m and the morning's fina l race was se t to begin when th e riders on the trac k in the Open Pro class sta rte d d isappear ing fro m view as a white-out with blizzard cond itions hit, leaving riders with no option bu t to try to stay on the track and finish. Skies clea red briefly and the remaining class was run w ith sno w Hur ri es an d hi gh w inds blow ing. The aftemoo n program was placed on hold whil e ride rs and spectators waited to see if the weather wou ld clear. Heemsberqen soars at Firebird Sprints By Michael Ross PHOENlX, AZ MAR 23-24 , "I wan ted it ba d ," said 27-y ear-o ld Roge r Heemsber gen when asked how he managed to win in the Unl imi ted GP race du ring round two of the CCS Southwest Sprint Series at Firebi rd Raceway. Roge r ma y have wan ted to w in, but there were 16 other racers who .wan ted to w in jus t as bad ly. On e of those racers was Greg Perry, who is carryi ng the nu mber-one p late. Greg led the sta rt of the Unli m ited GP a nd loo ked li ke a shoo-i n for the wi n after p u lling a two-second lead over Heemsbe rgen, bu t on lap four Perry low-sided in tu m 11 and it looked like his race was over. By shee r determination, Perry sa ved it afte r sliding along on the left en gine cover and then p ro ppin g hi s Kaw asa ki back u p on its wheels with his elbow and knee. " W h en m y su pe rbi ke b lew its m o tor in Unli mited Superbike, I had to u se my supersport bike, and 1 didn't have lime to cha nge the tires so the tires were gone. I co uldn 't believ e I saved it. I put a ho le in my leath ers at the knee and almost wen t thro ugh at the elbo w, too." Perry may hav e made the save of his career, bu t it allowe d Heemsb e rg e n a n d a ch ar ging John Hilto n to take ove r first and second place. Hilton, ridin g his CBR900RR, took secon d at the checkere d flag less th an a second behind Heemsbergen. " I had a bad yea r last year a nd ended up on my head so many limes 1 used up all my spare helme ts, so I'm just trying to get in as many laps as poss ible and ge t my timin g and rhy th m back: H ilto n explained.
