John Merwin was overanxious and jumped the first -mo te gate to lead the first lap . Flesia passe d Merwin on the back side of the track. while Kevin Foley held third and Shawn Smith had fourth ahead of Da rin Burkhard . Kevin Foley was in thi rd and Shaw n Smith had moved fro m fifth to fou rth ahead of Darin Burkh ard . Brian Sharp, who was in fourth on the first lap, found himsel f back in seven th, On the th ird lap Flesia pulled out a nine-sec a nd lead over Merw in . Smith advanced throu gh the pack and was now in third, pressuring Merwin. Fo ley sa w Burkh ar d o n h is rea r fende r, wh ile Darr el Miller had moved up to take over sixth . Foley passed Sm ith fo r third a t the wh ite nag. outjum ping him across the finish-line tabletop . Wh en the first mota came to a close, Flesia. Merw in, Foley, Smith a nd Burkhard finished in tha t orde r. How ever, Merw in had to set tJe for 19th beca use of his sta rting- line infraction , moving Foley, Smith and Burkhard up a notch, The seco nd mo ta saw Flesia lead ing at the all-importa nt first tu m wi th Smith a d eterm ined second . Sha rp wa s fo llow in g close be h ind in third wh en he slid out on the inside comer causing Miller and Merwin to faU as well, All three recovered quickly. Up front, Flesla led Smith, David Clabaugh, Mike Sche n k and Foley. Smith was p ressurin g for firs t when he wen t down in the comer after the finish -line jump, after which he left the track.
