Gray grabs gold atCarlsbad
non-sto p action!
By Dave Burgess
CARLSBAD, CA. MAR 9
FEATURED
Jeff Gray used good riding and old-fashioned
luck to cap ture the ove rall victory in the hotl y
con tested Vet Jun ior class at the Racing Enterprises Sa t urd a y Motocross he ld a t Ca rlsb ad
Raceway.
Of all the classes at Carlsbad on any give n
Satu rd ay, the Vet Ju nior class is us ually the
largest, and Gray knew he wo uld have his work
cut out for him as he lined up with 20 other riders for the first moto.
Rob Healy shot into the earl y lead ahead of
Curtis Jablonski and Chris Jackson. Gray was a
close four th but wasted li t tl e time getting
around Jackson. Healy was out in fron t on cruise
control and looked swprisingly smoo th. consideri ng he had al ready ridden two motos and
beaten all the 250cc Juniors earlier in the day.
Gray eased by the fading Jablonski, who was
still recov ering from a midweek cold, and set
ou t after Healy . Heal y was long gone and went
to the chec kers alone ahead of Gray and Jeff
Seifert, who had nipped Jablonski at the finish.
In moto tw o Healy agai n grabbed th e
ho leshot, with Jablonski, Gray and Seifert glued
to his rear fender. Healy con tin ued to ho ld on
o ut in front just ahead of Gray a n d Seifert.
Seifert knew lhatthe only way he coul d win the
overall was no t only to get around Gray, but
also to get Gray around Healy, so he began to
pu sh Gray hard. The resul ting speed increase of
the battling du o blew them both by Healy at the
halfway point.
Gray was never bo thered by the ad vances of
Seifertas he held on for the Inoto and the overall
ahead of Seifert, Healy and Jablonski .
