I took m y two sons d own to th e pits to ge t autog raphs and to meet th e riders after th e race. We came to th e pit sp ace of Will Da vis, as always one of the p re-ra ce favorites and th e d efe nd ing champion . On thi s ni ght, Davis di d n' t eve n m ake it to the main event. My two yo un g boys stood and waited to m eet him; Will came out , tu rn ed on his southern charm, mustered a sm ile and talked to m y so ns abo u t how th ey lik ed th e race an d racing in general. The point of this story is to say that for while it is good for D avis to have landed on a firs t-class team like TCR, they are equally lucky to have not only lan d ed a firs t-class rider, but a first -class man . As the fathe r of two of hi s biggest ·fans, I wish h im much success in th e corning year. . Steve Morris Amelia,OH Swink says.•. Brian Swink Reddick, FL Where are the women? e-mail I enjoyed YDur coverage of the Wilseyville Hare Scrambles (Issue #10, March 6). I was disappointed, h oweve r, th at the w omen w ere left out of th e results. Th e WDmen's class in District 36 is quite como. petitiv e and the ra ci n g is close . Th e women are racing to win, not jus t to finish these even ts and th ey d eserve th e recognition of being in the resul ts. Especially when it's tough just to finish. I really enjoyed the article ':The Last Four-Stroke" (Issue #8,Febr:uary 28) by INSIDE" : Mike Nicks . It was w ell w ri tten an d very in teresting. And I d idn't h ave to get the d ictionary out, or hav e to read it twice, to un derstan d it like so me of th e articles by a certain "repo rte r." Pete Brown Long Beach, CA Bad trophies The week before w e we nt to the Gat orback Nati onals, my son w on his class in . the A kron, Oh io, Arena cro ss Seri es . . When I went to coll ect my so n's firs tp lac e trophy, this m ean-lookin g overw e ig h t promoter barked : " Se n d the rider for his tro p hy. " I found m y SDn and sent hi m lim pi ng (o n h is a lmosthealed broken foo t) to the office , The grizzly-looking man smiled, put out his hand and sh ook my son' s, befor e saying: "Con gratu la tions, SDn, n ow p ick one of these," while pointing to a g rou p of gigantic 5- to 6-fDot·high trophies. My son thanked him, th en left hi s office wi th the biggest smi le I've seen since he go t his new H onda. Th e following Wednesd ay morn ing, our mechanics started the long two-day trip to the Ga to rba ck Nati onals towing the trailer. Ye s t erd a y, w hen I w a s wa lk ing through ou r dining room, I noti ced the bi g Ak ron trophy proudly displayed on my wife's good end- table. Banning two-strokes I am writing this in concern of the new leg isla tion sch ed u led to go into effec t · January 1, 1997, which w ill ban all new tw o-stroke dirt bikes from use on public lands in California. TD m y k nowledge thi s legislati on is goi ng through and w ill pr event us from obtaining g ree n stickers for dirt bi kes purchased after December 31, 1996. Wh y is th ere no opposition to this ? Surel y , we as a g ro u p ca n be a force in sto pping this legisl ati on . I w o ul d think the m anu fa cture r s w ould be obj ecting stren uously as I'm sure California is a huge market for them. Al so, I b et the m ajo rity of YDUr su b scribers are just like myself - serious trail ride rs. It's no t th at four-strokes are bad , but in my opinion they can't compare to two-strokes in perfonnance and we ight . . Consider the recen t in crea se in th e speed limits on ~ur highways. My gu ess is th e pollution th ese in creased spe eds cre ate far excee ds the p ollution DUr bikes emit. We as a g ro u p needto .band together and oppose this legislation.
