Holland hustles Hangtown
.Motocross
.
By Mark Hawkins
GORMAN, CA. MAR. 11,1996
New Team Pro Circuit...Kawasaki rider Rus ty
Holland did n't look like a greenhorn at round
four of the GFI California Winter Series at
Pra irie City SVRA, as he led an IS-rac er 250cc
Pro field in his first overall win since joining the
I
team.
.
As the first 250cc Pro moto sta rted. so did
the rai n. Suzuki Factory Rider Rodney Smilh
took off from the far outside in the first 250cc
Pro moto for the early lead. Smilh was followed
by Holland, local favorite Scoll Myers, Dean
Malson and Ricky Ryan. It was soon apparent
!hat the race to the checkered wou ld be between
Smith an d Holla nd , as by th e end of lap one
these two had begun to open up a sizable lead
over the third -place Myers. All eyes were on the
two leaders as Holland began to reel in Smith.
On the wide open uphill double-double in the
second lap, Holland outjumped Smith for the
lead and never looked baclc.
By now rain was becoming a real factor in
the race, as the traclcsurface was becoming sliclc.
One section in particular wa s very difficu lt, a
very steep downhill into a I8O-degree right-hande r and then back up the hill. Along with Holland and Smith, only Myers and Ryan looked
unaffected by the slippery conditions . Holland
continued to pull away from Smilh and Ryan
found his way around Myers when Myers crossrutted in a corner. Holland would cla im. the
moto victory while Smith held on for second .
Third went to Ryan, fourth to Myers and Matson rounded out the top five.
By the end of the first round of motos, traclc
officials deemed it unsafe to continue racing and
called the race complete. Overalls were awarded
by moto-one finishes.
