Fourt een -yea r-old Cha z Smith roos ted the

rounded the first tu rn 10 second s behind the
field . By lap two, Chaz Smith ha d a 6-second
lea d ove r Eve r t Sm ith . Barl o w w a s slici ng
through the pack and was already up to fourth
place. Barlow passed Ewin g, then railed around
Evert Smith to take overthe runner-up position
a lap later. Barlow put it in overdrive and wi thin
anothe r circuit of the sand track had Chaz Smith
in his sigh ts. When Barlow sta rted showing
Smith hi s fro n t fender, Sm ith turned it up a
notch to keep him at bay. A frustrated Barlow
cut undernea th Smith up on land ing off the finish-line jum p and set himsel f up wi th the inside
. line in the following tum to grab the lead, Barlow finished with a 20-second lead . Evert Smith
got pas t Cha z Smith to finish in second place,
A three-way battle for the lead eru p ted right
from the start of the 250cc Beginner race among
Bud Lewi s, Joh n Bevan and Benne tt . Bennett
emerged on top after a coup le of lap s with Lewis
fighting off Bevan. Bennett app eared to have the
big sandy berms mastered as his lead grew with
each pa ssin g lap right up to the finish. Bevan
. pa ssed Lewis for second, but Lewis never gave
up and after 30 min utes got the break he needed
when Bevan tipped ove r in a slow tum to hand
second to Lewis.
