Ben Bostrom (8) leads Matt Wait (95) in the Harley-Davidson Twin Sport race at Daytona; Wait ended up taking the win over Scott Zampach and Bostrom. Wenner was sticking by in secon d wi th David Smith a close third , moving into second on the fou rth lap and closing the o ne-secon d gap o n White . Run nin g , down the back s traigh t on th e fou rth lap, Smith ca ugh t White' s draft: then w a s joi ne d b y Wenn er a n d MIch a el Coh en af ter th ey left th e chica ne . The final lap wo uld begin with four riders on nearly eq ual terms, but tha t would cha nge at the International Horseshoe. Smith mad e a slight bobble, not mu ch, but enough to give White a little breathing room an d cause Wenner and .Cohen a secon d 's h es itation . N e xt It w a s White' s turn to m ake a m istake, hi s bein g an extra downsh ift in to the final infield corn ers, allowing the rest to close up. O n the back stretc~ Whit~ and .Smith ran si de by SIde, Smi th br iefly m th e lead , White han ging on to lead in to the chicane . No rmally you woul d n' t want to lead a fou r-rider pack out of the chica ne, but W hi te had th e m o tor a n d moves to mak e it work. He stopped the clock s half a len gth in front of Smit h, officially 0.010 seconds . Wenner a nd Cohen we re a shado w third and fourth. Mike Ciccott o took fifth. "I bea t th em int o th e ch ica ne a nd held them off," Whit e said . "I had to d o a bit of weavin g to shake them off." With th e fact ory teams writin g off th e ra in race s on Friday , th e Exper t Unlimited Su pe rb ike w a s th e fir st chance th e squads had to stretch thei r legs. Edwards ju m p ed from the third row to the fron t of the pack by the time the 24-rider field exited the chicane on t he fir s t la p . Edwa rds began to p u ll away as Vance & Hines Yamaha's Tom Kipp worked his way up from a m~ th row starting positio n. Kip p w as into fifth at the halfway mark, then in to second as he hi t the banking on the fourth lap . Edwards sat up exiting the Inte rnational Horseshoe on the fma l lap , Kipp closed u p considerably, but the Te~an was sti ll ou t front w hen they pulled into th e p it lane. Pr ieto was third on th e openi ng la p before b reaking out of a pack of four. When Kipp joined the fray Pr ieto w as briefly relegated to fourth. As the leaders mad e their br eak and exit on t he fi nal lap, Prie to took over th e lead and the win, the margin a healthy 4.19 seconds . "I don' t kn ow w ha t to say," Pri eto said. "I di dn't think I had a chanc e with (Mike) Fitzpatrick and some of the pro guys there." . Fitzp a tr ick was second in fro nt of Bre tt Me tz ge r, Marco Ma rtinez, and Jona tha n Bolton. The Exp ert Heavyweight Superbike lived up to its nam e w ith nine fact~JrY riders p re-e nt ered a nd seven ma ki ng the grid . Je t ti ng up fro m the fi ft h ro w , Edwards was up to fourth w hen the 42rid er field hit the ban king, then in to the lead in NASCAR turn fou r. Lapping in th e 1:52s, Edwa rds had m ore th an a five-sec ond lead on the second lap an d it wo u ld grow until he pulled out with abou t 15 seconds in hand. Mic hael Fit zpa tri ck ha d b een d ropped to secon d when Edwards took over the lead , and he held the spo t u ntil getting more factory company . Aaron Yates was first past, flying by on the w est bankin g on th e fourth la p , w it h Scott Russell waiting another lap before m o ving into secon d . The fa ct o r y Suz uk is wer e one-two, then came FItzpa trick, the third factory Suzuki of Pas cal Picotte, and Kevin Graham. "Ori ginally, they just wanted us to go out an d pu ll in on the white- flag lap. Then they said, 'Go ahead and finish the race.' Man , this new Yoshimura Suzuki is really w or kin g good and I'm lovin g it," Yates sa id . " I w as su p posed to be test in g the fr on t en d th a t time, bu t I did n' t think mu ch abou t the fro nt end . I was just kind of ha vin g fun and try ing to go fast and catch eve rybody." . The final race that Edwards do rninated was the Unlimited GP. Afte r building a 4.2-seco n d lea d o n th e firs t lap , Edw a r ds turned u p t h e gas a n d d ropped to an unofficial la p tim e of 1:51.44 on the first flyin g lap, a time he backed up wi th a 1:51.52. The next tw o wer en't as fas t, but his lead was secu re as he wa s joined by Vance & H in es Yama ha tea m m at es Kip p and Ja m es . The Yamaha factory bikes made up the top thre e from the secon d lap until the y pulled out on the last lap. Prieto had worked his way through the pack until he was int o fourth on the fo u r th la p , a s p o t th at wou ld s o ~n b e com e fir st. W hen th e lea d t rw dropped ou t Priet o was in th e fro nt, James Ra nd ol p h moved in to secon d , dropping Michael Fitzpatrick to third. Jona than Bolton was a close third, wit h Brett Met zger in front of a gro u p contesting sixth. "That's d efinitel y as quick as I' ve ever gon e here ," Fitzpatrick said, after being told he was lapping in the 1:53s. Th e tri o wen t th ree wi de off of the final turn for the run to the flag, with Wait eking ou t the win by a mere 0.030 seconds . Zampach was the shad ow in second with Bostrom third . "Tha t was the mo st in tense race I've eve r been in," Wait sai d . "I just want to thank God for a safe race. It got prett y crazy out ther e at times. I also wan t to congratulate Ben (Bostro m) on his run. I know he came up from the back of the pack." . Bostrom said he led out of th e chican e "by chance and choice. The basic th ing about this track is ge tti ng int o a good draft. Most of the time you d on 't want to lead off the chicane, bu t I had been ga ining grou nd thro ugh there and I tried to make a real good run through it one more time. I guess it was n' t quite good eno ug h." It too k Wait 15 minutes, 53.057 seconds to compl ete the seven-lap, 25-mile race. He averaged 94.131 mph. Zam p ach led th e 3D-rider field for m uch of the first lap w ith Wait taking over on the second a nd lead ing a pack t h a t would include five riders, th en four, and, finall y, th ree.
