Canada Post Intemarional Publications Mail Trials fan A coup le of years ago I started subscribin g to Cycle N ews because I'd been told that yo u occas ion ally ran som e articles on observed trials. When I sta rted getting my first issu es, I w as pleased to see that you did indeed run som e ar ticles. Then I realized that there were more an d more arti cles in following issu es; then some of o u r N o rthern Ca lifornia events w ere being covered and I actually go t to see my name in prin t. This brin gs me to the reason for this letter: Issue #7, February 21,1 996. My excitement w hen I saw th e front p age was hard to contain... harder still wa s wa iting un til I got hom e to read it. The ed ito rs in general, Donn Maeda in particular, have done an ou tstan ding service to ou r sport. This issue is a collectors item for m e. Donn's articl es on the new bikes and the National riders wa s literal ly food for my eyes. I gobbled . A grea t addition are the world arti cles from John Dick inson, and it was also nice to hear about Berni e (Schreiber ). Thank you for your coverage of trials. Actually, th ank you for the excellent coverage tha t yo u give m ost m o torcycl e events. Since subscribin g, I'v e learned a lot about other forms of mo tor cycle recreation and competition that aren' t pop u lar in cen tral California. Again, th ank you an d keep it up. Neil Novack Big Sur, CA Teardown I Your misgivin gs about th e In ternet ar e well founded (Teardown, Issu e #7, February 21). Plagiarism is ram pan t, qua lity rar e, w ith w riter s saying in 700 words what cou ld be said in 70 words. A few issu es back we referre d to th e Internet as "a kind of gian t Tupperware p arty fo r co m puter gecks." We w ere being kind. One of our writers p redicts the Net will go th e way of the CB rad io cra ze . Remember that? Brian Halton Still no t on-line San Francisco, CA Halton is the publisher of City Bike, 0- newspaper based ill San Francisco, California... Editor Teardown II I just read with gr eat inter est the Tear- down colum n by Paul Car ru thers. Now while I have always found Cycle News to be a credible editorial, Pau l's proclaiming it to be the m otorcycle ind ustry's fastest publication is taking self praise a bit too fa r, wh ich al so incidenta lly br in gs to m ind an old proverb abou t people who live in glass hou ses... etc. You see, re cently I rea d yo u r " In Th e Wind " article about th e recent Grand Prix tests at Shah Alam. No t only did I read the exact same report word for word in Britain's Motor Cycle News, I also read it a full we ek earlier. Now that's fast. Now I know you guys wo rk with the s am e jo urnalists in G ra n d Prix and World Sup erbike, even the tests on these machines are done by the same rep or ters, etc., but d on 't clai m to be " the fas tes t publicati on in the industry" (assumin g, or co u rse, the ind us tr y is w o rldwide) wh en some of us know th is not to be the case. No, no, please don't throw stones at me. Sean McGloin Yon kers, NY SeOlI, you are absolutely correct. M otor Cycle News in Ellgland is indeed the fastest publication in the industry . M y apologies, old chap. By the way, I'll bet yOIl a pint of Guinness you can't fin d the Atlanta Supercross coverage in your next MCN... Editor. SWM seeks SWF I realize tha t you guys are in the business of re porting m ot or cycle new s, but h ow abo ut this for a tw ist of the wrist: How about a small section for per son al ad s? Being a single and livin g in the '90s isn' t a pi cn ic . Ma y be you co ul d ca ll it "Hooked up ." Let's face it, m ost of th e general public has a goo d dose of brain da mage (not from endo-ing, m ind you ), but you get th e picture. Most of th e ind ividuals I have m et who do ride are tru ly unique and usuall y ha ve th eir act together. The biggest triple ju m p is tha t d irt babes are suc h a rar e com modity. Where d oes o ne loo k for su ch a person? Point blan k - the th rott le is in your hand. Thanks for a gre at pape r. Craig Roberts cmroberts®VaIIeynet.com Seeking Dale I was tryin g to ge t an address for Dale Qu art e rl e y, the road r ac e r wh o just reti red. Ducatismo Ala n Cathca rt' s bias to w a r d Ducati m ot orcycles has been known for a long tim e, ye t his choi ce for best superbike, and w hy, is quite pleasing. I am tired of hearin g the whiners and how th e ru les of ra cin g favor th e Du ca ti. If the rul es fav ored a twin, Harley's entry sh ould h ave b een more com petitive from th e sta rt. Why h aven 't m ore m anufacturers used a twin or even a trip le? After Cook Nielson's dominating win at Dayton a in th e late 70s, th ere was a lon g dr y spell withou t a success ful twin in supe rbike racing. There was eve n talk back then th at th e rules favored the fours and even with the weigh t an d d isp lacement advan tage there was no way a twi n would be com petitiv e. The formula h as bee n basically the same for all these years and Ducati had the vision that they could compete suc cessfully in thi s arena. The fact that a m anageab le power deliver y has an advantage over sheer horsepower suggest to me th at th e tire manufacturers b reak ou t of th ei r ex is ting p a radigm w hen it comes to m otorcycle tire technology. In th e mean tim e, I will enjoy riding my 916 - w hich happen s to be the most fantastic m achine I've ever ow ne d, ridde n, raced or been asso ciated wi th.
