Marqu ez was first ou t of the gate followed by Moren o, Simpkins and Smith . Earl y in lap two Simpkins charged up to second and started to work on the leader. Marquez near ly washed out in tum two, but the leader hung on un til just befor e the white flag. when Simpkins put on a textbook block pass to put himself in front. For the rest of the race it was Marquez flying by the seat of his pants tryi ng to recapture the lead . Simpkins pulled off the win with Marquez, Moreno and Smith folloy,ring h im. Results 50: 1. Rohr had to figh t off Scott Dunlavey in the firs t moto and Rick Dou ghty in the afternoon go-aro und , Dou ght y' s effo rts were cu t sho rt, litera lly, when an unforgiving rock shea red off h is rig ht footpeg. It was an all-around good day for Rohr. He also wo n the Over 30 Expert race , bett er in g Du n lavey's 1-2 with a 2-1 overall placing. Ho nda -mou nted jeff Naff was another dou ble w inne r, topping the Int ermed iate field in the Over 30 and Spor tsman 250cc classes. Prom ot er Tom Anderson lik es to change the track every year. Squires shot forw ard to claim the lead . lansing follow ed in Squi res' wake pa st Taylor and to the finish line . Moto tw o had j ans in g ou t fron t off the s tart, but Squir es passed h im for the lead and the two ran aw ay from the field . Mike Klement raced h is Open KTM at the h ead o f t he co mb ine d Over 40 I Open 500 motes, grabbing both holesho ts and lead ing the field to the checkered flag. Chester Czajkow ski followe d Klement in the number-on e Over 40 spo t as Kin n ie McGraw and Da rrell Bish op t rie d to u surp him. Bish op finall y tackled Cajkowski and push ed him ba ck a couple of positions as he and McGr aw too k th eir battle into the next tap. Czajkowski reeled in McGraw for second an d he ld his position to the end . Moto two saw Czajkows ki take the Over 40 lead . McGraw chased him , followed by Ray Arnold, Ed Abbo tt, and Bish op. Abbott caugh t Arnold in lap thr ee and tried tirelessly to pass, bu t Arn old held his posit ion solid . Bish op set his sights on both Abbott and Arnold and used the final lap to gain two positions for thir d as McGraw almost tag ged Cajkowski at the flag fo r the w in. Over 375 riders from 15 states competed in the ope ning round of th e Yamaha Su nshine Stat e Cha mpionship Series held at Motocross of Marion Cou n ty, whe re Ton y Lorusso claim ed the overall wins in the 125 and 250cc classes. Lorusso kick ed things off by lea di ng th e first 12Scc Pro motu with Anth on y Pocorobba, Scott Carter, Barry Ca rsten an d Robbie Skag gs following. Carter , Ska ggs and Carsten battl ed for the runner-up spot for six lap s but th eir positi on s wo uld stay the sa me . Lorusso crossed the fi nish lin e fir st w it h team ma te Ca rte r hold ing on to second . Skaggs, Ca rst en and Pocorobba rounded out the top five places. Once again Lorusso jumped out to the ea rly le ad wi th Ca rter , Pocorobb a, Chad Shepard an d Tim Pusteza k giv ing chase. Carsten. wh o starte d sixth, quick ly moved by Pustezak and Shepard to sit in the fourt h s po t. Poc o robba then set his sigh ts on Carter and motored by only to find that Lorusson had opened up a four-second lead . With Loru sso at the helm, the bat tl e fo r second wa s heating up among Pocorobba, Cart er and Ca rsten. Carst en forced his w ay by Carter in the esses and closed in on Pocorobba, wh o wa s abl e to hold off Carsten but ha d to se ttle for second behind Lorusso .
