Bailey grabb ed the boleshot and challengers Tim Crain on a Yamaha, and Eli Beard on a KTM couldn 't overcome the advantage . Sharing in the Expert Purse with Bailey, Crain and Beard was Tony Curtis, finishing a respectable fourth. At th e halfway m ark , su p er-com pe tit iv e sen iors were running nint h, 10th, and 11th over all with KTM-mo unted Gorman Smith leadi ng by seven seconds over second-place Darrell Judy and 27 second s over third-place.Butch Ga rdner. At the end of lap three Smith had to change goggles an d this allowed judy to take the lead. Motocrosser Shane Leyde n threw his leg over a trial s bike for the first time ever only two d ays prior to th e eve n t, and came awa y the clear-cut win ner aboard hi s Bult aco Pa rts Ob solete / Axcel Fas t Gr aphics / DMR / Seattle Racin g-sp onsored Gas Gas JTR250. "I wanted to enter the Beginner class, but m y fri ends m ad e me rid e Sportsman," said Leyd en. "This stu ff is actu ally prett y fun . There wa s no motocro ss race thi s weekend, so I figur ed , ' Why not?'" _ Leyden se t the pace right frpm th e .get-go, and apart from one five incu rred when he tri ed to splatter a tricky section, dropped no more than two points in any single section. At the end of three 10-section loops, Leyden had give n up only 21 poi nts an d turned in 18 clea n R Shane Leyden nabbed th e Cougar Classic Tria l win in his first try. rides - not bad for a first-timer. Second went to Gas Gas rider Kelly Bellmar, the SCTA mem ber turning in a final score of 25 points and 15 clean s. Sonny Su and Todd Moore ended the da y tied for th ird, as both riders had 25 points and 19 cleans. Normally, a tie breaker goes to ones, twos, threes and then fives, but Su an d Moore had matched each other' s scores perfectly. Richard' Zinsmann and Rich Thomas round ed out the top five. ATA Presi de nt Alan Malquist made his return to Intermediate B class compe tition after breaking his leg last yea r, an d scored a pop ular win aboa rd h is OTP Beta. Many of Malmquist's regular competitors we re Jet dumbfounded by hi s su d de n burst in form . Mal m quist topped the 16-ride r field with a score of 31 poin ts a nd 13 cleans. Gary Oborn was second- best w it h a 40/14, w hile Mar k Miller w as th ird with a 48/13 . Rick Tenbroek an d BPO owner John "Jordi" Thompson rounded out the top finishers. . Uni ted States World Round pro moter Mike Krasun car ried on with his w inning ways in the Interm ed iate A class, in spite of breaking his righ t hand in a practice cra sh one d ay earlier. Rick Ryan 's consistency at round three of the GFI Northe rn Wint er Seri es paid off w ith the 12Scc Pro-class overall win at th e LaGrange MX. Rod ney Smith grabbed th e m oto-o n e holes hot . followe d by Ryan, Scott Myers and Jeff Pestan a. While Sm ith began to bui ld a com fortab le lead ove r Ryan , Myers and Holland were dicing over the th ird spo t. Holland, on the third lap, set Myers up in the new switchback section an d ou tpowered him for the po sition . Dean Matson soo n fou n d hi s wa y arou nd Pestana and wa s closing fast on Myers. just past the halfway poi n t, Holla nd took over second and se t hi s sigh ts on Smith. just as it looked as if Ho lland was reelin g in the leader, Hollan d busted the berm on an off-cambe r sweeper and lost four pos itions. Meanwhile, Ma tson dropped Myers to fourth. Sm ith would take the win with Ryan finishing a com fortable secon d . Third wo u ld go to the har d-cha rging Ma tson, who was followed by Myers. Hollan d wou ld hold on to round out the top five. . Smith m istimed the gate in mota two an d found hi mse lf hu ng up as the rest of th e field followe d Myers th roug h tu rn one. Smith had picked off six ride rs by the en d of lap two, putting him in 10th. Rya n and M at son found th eir way aro und Myers, an d Sp ud Walters moved u p to fifth . Wit h the man in fron t bu ild ing a sizable lead over the second- place Ryan and Mats on, Smith was not too far back and w as m oving up fast . By the com pletion of lap six, Smith wa s challenging Walters for the fifth position. Walters and Smith got by Myer s on th e last lap . Local rid er Roby Leach took two second places for seco nd overall, and Don Bisceglia from West Linn scored a first and a thi rd for third overa ll.
