Fire w orks flew as soo n as th e firs t 500cc Sportsman Expert mot o go t u nde r way. When the gate dr op ped , Krug h jum ped out front with CZ~m ounted Ken Greene in hot pu rsu it. After tw o lap s of fier ce hand lebar ban gin g, Gree ne began to fade, but befo re Krugh co uld take a breath , the big Maico ridden by Michael Halp in mov ed up and locked onto Kru gh 's back fender . The duo finishe d in that order with a rematch sche duled for the next moto. Sure eno ug h, moto two foun d the same pair figh tin g for the lead like two dogs for a bone. Lap after lap, Krugh fought off the advances of Halpin, finall y takin g th e checke red flag by inches for a har d -fou ght 1-1 ove ra ll. Th e 250cc Sporst ma n Interm edi at e-cl ass action was no less exciting as CZ-moun ted Dave Helleck ra n and hid from second -place finisher Ed Lowe-nbe rg in mo to one. Adding ins ul t to injury, Helleck won weari ng cons tructio n boots and Levis, on a bike wi th shocks bou ght at a garage sale. Refu sing to be shown up twice in a row, Lowen berg left the line in moto two like he was sho t from a cannon. AMA District 17 held its annual awards banquet at the Pittstick's Pavilion in Ottawa, where some 450 riders, friends and family members ga thered to enjoy an exce llent mea l, reco gn ize those receiving awards and do some midwinter bench racing. AMA Presid en t Ed Youngblood, the guest speaker, pr esented som e statistics on ama teu r competition th a t indicated th at District 17 is responsi ble for well over 10 percent of all of the activity in the U.S. The first induc tees in the District 17 Hall of Fame were also recogn ized at the banquet. This award w as created to recogn ize people a n d organizations that ha ve made a very significa nt contri bution to moto rcycling in Illinois. The 1995 indu ctees inclu ded Bill Tuman, Bill Maxey and The Peoria Motorcycle Club . Tuman started rid ing dirt track in 1946 and won 190 races in 1948 an d 1949. He rode with the Na tional number-one plate in 1954 and wo n a total of five Nationals in his caree r. He mostly raced Indi ans and was a member of the Indian Wrecking Crew aloo g with Bobby Hill and Ernie Beckman . He retired from racing in 1955 and has continued to be acti ve in motorcycling. He has served as District 17 MX di rector and is currently the treasurer. Bill Maxey is a charter member of the AMA Off-Road Congress an d has served 29 years . He has a wealth of know ledge abo u t d istrict affairs and always brings wisdom to the mee tings he a tte nds . He is a fonner enduro rider who preferred wres tling his Har lcy to ridin g an English bike like a lot of the riders in the '60s. The Peoria Motorcycle Club started in 1931 and ha s been a lon gt ime sup porter of the d istrict . It is the only club running an AMA Grand Natio nal race, the Peoria TI, which is not only a fixture on the schedu le bu t one of the best races every year. The club also ho sts road and vintage events . AKRON,OH, JAN. 19 ·21 Mike Katin do minated the Moto-X/Patriot Excavating Summit Arenacross with five wins du ring the wee kend, movi ng into the CRA Win ter Arenacross Series lead in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Katin wo n both mains on Frid ay d espite a broken collarbone sustained in Decemb er. Josh Swea t stayed close to Karin, finis hing second in the 250cc A ma in. In the 125cc A, Sweat crashed in the nasty "Patr iot Pounders" rocker sect ion, remounted and kept pace with Karin, finishing one lap back. Satu rd ay night's jum p con test resul ted in a t ie bet w een Vince Karnow and Kati n. Each pilot' s can-can earned. $300 in pri ze money, Katin sta rted Satu rda y night's 125cc A ma in in four th an d patientl y wo rked into the lead . Sweat, Sean Hogan , Tom Welch and Karn ow rou nded ou t the top five. Swea t hol eshot th e 250c c A main, n ever reli nquis hi ng the lead . Karnow held a stead y second ahead of Katin . The group, never separated by more than a few bike lengths, finished in that order . Sunday 's 25 0cc A ma in victory w en t to Katin. Karn ow and Dave Hand followed Katin acros s the finish. The 125cc A main on the last da y of racing proved to be the race of the weekend. Sweat left the gate first, with Tomm y Colli er, Kat in and Welch in tow . Karinleaped past Collie r on lap three and began wh ittling at Sweat's lead . Sweat a nd Katin rode no se-to-taild uring laps seven th rou gh 11 u ntil Sweat execute d a br ake check in a d eep ly ru tted cor ner. Afte r slamming into Swea t's rapidly slowing machine, Katin wisely changed lines, wo rking the deep outside be rms. Hopkins dropped just 15 points en rou te to victory ove r KTM ~ mounted Allen Gravi tt, who dropped only one p oi nt mor e t ha n Hopkin s af ter losing time in th e tight, 13-mile section be fore the ma in gas area on the 53-mile course . "Sno w birds " Du an e Con ner an d Dou g Blackwe ll we re third and fifth overall as well as first and secon d, resp ectively, in the 250cc A class . Conne r beat Blackwe ll by one point , 17-18, while Fran klin Ramey 11I finished third with 19 points. Ramey took hom e fourth overall, however, and seco n d in th e AA d i vision, w in n ing the tie breaker over Blackwell by a mer e fou r second s. On the previous day , the kids got thei r tum to try to sta y on time d u rin g the Sumter Min i Endu ro. Action bega n with the Zero to Eight age grou p wh ere, Christopher McCoy jumped into the woods from row one and began to se t wh at many thought wou ld be a winning pace. But Tim Myers took off and clea rly dominat ed th e 16rid er field . Only two of his eight check sco res we re m a tch ed , b oth of th em b y ru n ner·up McCoy. Derek Pitzer negotia ted the nine-tenth smile, 18-mph-average course to finish th ird, just ahead of a tie betw een Josh Barr ow and Billy Whitaker. Barro w took four th via the tie breaker. c.c. Weath erl y established h imself as the winner of the Nint? to 11 class early in the eve nt wh en he dropped on ly th ree points at the first check - a feat that would be unmatched through out the day.
