DEC. 3 While there appears to-be little cha nce of a bamburner se ries in San Jose thi s yea r, th e third round of the End ur othon series in and a round the San jose Mile had ano ther bam-burner 250cc race, won again by the dyno du o of Greg Miller and Dan Ha rt Ir . A few add ed faces from the Cross Country wo rld and a fab few lap s from Daytona Sho rt Track Na tiona l w inne r Brett Landes and the Hlebo broth ers made for an exciting 48 laps on the near ly two-mile scrambles track. With the Har t/Miller duo in ch arg e a t the beginning of the second tw o-ho u r ra ce of the day, the H lebo brothers, Steve an d john , had ad d ed a bit of flavor w ith a YZ250, and Brian Gar raha n tea med with Co le Ma rshall for the cross coun try element. Steve Mason held the second overall spot on lap one and led the Ironman Sp ortsman d iv is ion, b u t w isely sta yed a wa y from the Experts and National-numbere d riders as the spee ds increased . . Mason 's brother, Vet Exper t Johnny, moved to second p lace (of 67 in the class) and doggedly • pu rsued the leader, only to be d isplaced by the team of Scan Lollar and Ga ry Rogers, who went by on the third lap in p urs u it of the new leader, Landes. Land es led for thr ee circuits b ut finally was passed by pro motocrosser Lollar. But Lollar d idn ' t last in front either , as the Hlebo brothers made their way into the leading spo t and h el d it u n ti l lap IS , w h e n t h e Hart /Miller du o flexed a bit of muscle and, after a thr ee-lap ba ttle, began to inch their Hond a a way to w in by mo re than half a la p a t the checke red nag. The Rogers/ Lollar pairin g came home thi rd , w hile Maso n, raci ng fo r the first time in more than a yea r, wa s fou rth overall. Nate Wait teamed w ith Paul Bergstrom to finish fifth . In only his third race ever, Yelton found gold a t Rainbo w. "A ctually it's the.first piece of pla stic I ever got," said Yelton. "Andy Mairs was a little faster than me in the first race, but in the second moto I got my second wind." Ron Sharp posted a 6-3 finish for th ird while Steve Latham and Robert Duncan rounded out the top six.
