Blackwell scores at Big Stripper Hare Scrambles By Paul Michels LYNNVlLLE, IN, NOY. 19 Doug Blackwell of West Virginia took home the lion's share of cash at the Big Stripper Hare Scramble, named after the machines formerly used in local coal~mining operations. Blackwell led the way until he overshot a tum and a freight train of pro riders went past, consisting of four-time national champion Scott Summers, Duane Conner, Terry Cunningham and Robert Patterson, in that order. By the start of the second lap Blackwell had worked his way past Conner, Cunningham and Patterson, but remained behind Summers by a small margin. Mike Morris got past Patterson and into the top five. The order among the front-runners remained the same through the third lap. Summers led going into the fourth lap with Blackwell about 20 seconds back. Morris moved past Cunningham to take over fourth place. In the fifth lap, Conner went down. breaking off his front brake assembly and ending his day. That moved Morris to third and a hard-charging Mike Sampson to fourth ahead of Cunningham. Going into the sixth and finaJ lap, Summers enjoyed about a 3Q-second lead on Blackwell. At the halfway point, Summers caught a tree branch, shot off a steep bank and landed in a swamp at the bottom of the hill. Summers and a helpful spectator extracted the bike as the rest of the pro class went by. The star-crossed Honda rider th~n went on to run out of gas about a "alf mile from the finish. With Summers out of the race, Blackwell inherited the win, pocketing the extra $500 the Lynnville area Dirt Riders posted for the overaU. Blackwell said, "1 didn't see Scott anywhere on the course so I just assumed Summers won." Morris held on for second as Sampson moved into third. Cunningham took fourth while Patterson came'in fifth. McMinn doubles at Peoria Vintage Motocross By David Chrone PEORIA, AZ, NOV. 12 Racers were treated to a great track layout and there was excellent racing in all classes at the third round of the AYORA Vintage Motocross series, held at Canyon Raceway. Ken Lusk took his 125cc CZ to yet another win in the Premier Intermediate 125cc class. Ryan Dickson made his first appearance and brought a DKW with the leading-link front end in second. Glen McMinn brought out a '67 Montesa Scorpion. He took off the lights and won the Premier ovice division as well as the Over 50 Novice Gass. With the Calzona Winter Vintage MX Series event scheduled for December 3 in Arizona, most riders have been competing in two classes and some racers are riding in three. Huskymounted Tom Rogers and Darrin Trotta on a Honda Elsinoire traded wins in Sportsman Novice and Over 30 Novice. Don Jones, also Honda-Mounted, had an excellent final moto and ended up with second place in Over 30 Novice after a Za-year layoff. Each AVDRA event brings out new racers """-un> Medina flexes muscle at Star West Supercross Taft and 60cc (0-8) leader Mike Alessi battled for about three laps, bringing back memories of Pee Wee battles from a few years ago. In the end Taft went on for the moto win in front of Medina, who recovered for second late in the race while Tommy Cochran finished third in his first race with the older riders in the 9-11 division, having celebrated his birthday earlier in the week. Medina simply smoked the field in the allimportant second mota. Taft finished a solid second while Cochran again rounded out the top three. Jason Griffin powered his mighty KTM 50 to the overall 50cc (4-6) win on the main track. Griffin had an early-race battle with Chad Gores, who has shown a lot of improvement in his riding over the past months. Griffin went on for the overall win while Gores, Kameron Scott, "Mighty" Brandon Million and AC Racing-backed Mike Meade Jr. rounded out the top five.
