Manley finished a lonely third on his 125cc machine with Yoho and Tipping round.;ng ou t the top fi ve. Yoho shot out of the gate to start moto two with Swink, Manley, Tipping and Pocorobba giving chase. Pocorobba passed Tipping on the opening circWt as Swink pressured Yoho for the point. Swink made his ",ove by outbraking Yoho in a turn to take over the lead. One lap later, Manley passed Yoho in the whoops to take over the runner-up spot. With Swink in the lead by about five seconds, Manley turned on the afterburners to cut that lead down to about three seconds. but that's as close as Manley would get. Swink flew across the finish line to take the moto and the biggest chunk of the cash purse. Manley finished in second with Pocorobba passing Yoho late in the race to finish third. Yoho and Tipping filled out the top five positions. . Swink also competed in the 16-24 class, where he won both motos over Todd Gardner, Ronnie Renner and Yahoo Results P/W (4-6): 1. NOV. 12 Hard-fought'double-moto wins gaye Bob Lucas the Old Timers MX Assodation Amateur-class overall honors during Californja Racing Oub's Sunday motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Bob Gardella led the large field through the first turn in moto one followed by Bob Breach, Charles Howell and Carlos Marin. Lucas and R;chard Bealer quickly came up from midpack starts to run in fourth and fifth places, respectively after one lap. Lucas and Bealer continued their forward trek and overtook Breach and Gardella for the top two spots a lap later. Once out front. Lucas and Bealer started to slowly pull away from the pack. Howell pjcked up the pace and reeled in the two front-runners to make it a three-way battle for the lead. HowelJ got around Bealer and hounded Lucas all the way to the checkered flag. Howell tried every trick in the book, but came up a bike length short at the finish. Bealer took third over Gardella and Phil Black. . Garde.lla duplicated his first-moto holeshot in round two to lead Ruthann Renaux and Lucas, who shot around Renau)( then outjumped Gardella at the'FMF tower to move into the lead on the opening lap. Renaux outbraked Gardella to move into second place. Renaux latched on to Lucas's back fender and by lap three the duo had pulled clear of Gardella by 10 seconds. Renaux spent the entire mota looking for a way around Lucas, then got stuck behind lappers on the final circuit, giving Lucas his second win of the day. Howell ended up coming from seventh to finjsh third and second overall. Tn regular eRe action, Shawn O'Brien ran away and hid in the first 125cc Intermed.;ate mota for the win. Chris Neitzel took second over Tyson Taylor and Oint Shepard. Moto two saw Neitzel and O'Brien argue over the lead from the drop of the gate. O'Brien dogged eitzel up until the last lap when he used a textbook block-pass to finally get the lead. Coming out of the final tum on the last lap Neitzel saw his chance to regain the lead and took it. "We came to the whoops right before the finish and he (O'Brien) didn't triple in and I did," Neitzel said. "I just held jt wide open through the rest of the whoops, kinda out of control. but I edged him out by two feet at the finish line." Results P/W 8-2: 1. Doug Carter (KTM),; 2. Daniel Runyon (Yam); 3. J~n Ellis, Adam Portue and the rest of the 16-rider field to ba.ttle for the remaining track po itions. On the second lap of the five-lap feature, Andlovec stretched his lead, while Ellis put his Clawson Motor Sports/Chris Racing-sponsored Kawasaki into second after djspatching with Gregg and Sturdevan, who were too busy d.;cing with Portue. Gregg gained the advantage for good on the last lap. and with that the order was set with Andlovec the easy winner over Ellis, Gregg and Sturdevan. Andlovec roosted to an early lead again in moto two, but a new challenger appeared on his trail, as Justin Morton made his presence known: Morton had suffered a flat tire in molo one and had to slip around and truggle for a fifteenth-place finish. With the flat fixed and traction restored, Morton gave chase but couldn't match Andlovec's blistering pace, though he had an easy time keeping Ellis and the rest of the pack in his dust. Anlovec's ]-1 score gave him first for the day, with Ellis second overall with a 2-3 combo. Sturdevan's consistent fourthplace finishes captured third overall. with Gregg and Ryan McCarthy rounding out the top five ~overall. . An.other noteworthy performance came in the 125cc Intermed.;ate class as Jeff Northrup joined the class for the first time in his racing career, moving up from the Novice class. The former Northern California minieycle star proceeded to stun the field and place third in the first moto behind Shawn Parks and Cody Killam. In the second molo, Northrup got a great start, and freight-trained around the track behind pros Scott Myers and Scott Davis. After two laps, the pros left orthrup further and further behjnd, but Northrup's attempt to keep pace with the faster riders allowed him .to place a lot of track between his Kawasaki and secondplace rider Oiff Cook. orthrup raced flawlessly for the re.maining six laps to earn the win. When the results were tallied, Northrup was the overall winner by virtue of his 3-1 mota scores. Results 125 BEG: 1 Rod Km (Sw;); 2. Bobby Pauhng (Suz); 3. Brandon Duntsch (Suz); 4. NOV. 3 Brian Bruning parlayed a failed hub on Destry Abbott's lame duck KX250 into a rare Pro win at the Whiplash Motorsports Mammoth Grand Prix held along the banks of the flowing San Pedro River and through the streets of the tiny copper-smelting town of Mammoth. Riders flocked to the mountainous mining d.;strict and thrilled the locals with 208 dirt bikes in the streets. Bruning was able to hold off Ken Kozlik due in part to the quarter-liter rider's strong performances at recent BlTO and AMA events. Trailing Bruning by 90 seconds, Kozlik smoked upand-coming expatriate from the Mini ranks Dayton Raper and a surprisingly off-pace Brian Storrie. David Lennon, fresh off hi Canyon-class
