Areo lee to Venegas Currie quick at Reddick MX By Gen Moore REDDICK, FL, NOV. 12 Over ISO riders attended the Southeast Regional Motocross Championships at Motocross of Mar- SACRAMENTO, CA, NOV. tl ion County where Paul Currie posted a four- hree-time Tee Champion Charlie Venegas earned a perfect score of 15 to take the win and the points lead in the second round of the Ice Speedway Championship Series at Arco Arena in Sacramento. During the first round in San Diego, John Grant had dropped one point to Venegas in the heat races but carne on strong in the main event to take the win, tying both riders with 14 points. Robert Curry, Mark Hannah and Pat Litt were tied for second place in the series. As the evening in Sacramento began, it appeared as though Grant and Venegas would continue their head-to-head battle. . Gary Ackroyd, Grant, Venegas and Mike Faria all came out winners in the first round of heat races, earning three points each. Faria, a former U.s. Champion, was trying to get back in the groove of riding short tracks after racing the European circuit for the past year. Ironically, in the first heat of round two, Faria was the only rider who was able to stay upright. On the first restart Kelley Bennett broke the tapes, taking himself out. He was replaced by res, erve lan Ferris, who, along with Jeremy O'Neal and Ted Taylor, kept crashing in the first corner. After the third crash Ferris too was ejected, and second reserve John Pierce was brought in. The race was finally finished with Faria taking the win followed by Taylor and Pierce. The remainder of round two was fairly routine with Faria, Venegas, and Grant finishing with six points to their credit. Ackroyd, however, dropped one point to Hannah. Curry was still in the hunt as well, running only one point ahead of Hannah in their face-off for second. . In the first heat of round three, Curry scored a victory over Grant. Venegas and Faria went head-ta-head later in the round with Venegas coming out on top. The win left Venegas as the only rider who could still attain a perfect overall moto sweep in the 125cc A and Pro classes. In the opening Pro moto, Currie led the way with Jarrett Tipping, Jason Dodds, Kenny lones and John Fesler giving chase. Jones passed Dodds on the middle double with Fesler also T By Kyle Myers passing Dodds in the next corner to move into fourth. Currie quickly pulled away from the pack to amass a five-second lead by the end of the second circuit. Jones dosed in on Tipping anJ made several attempts at the runner-up position. Tipping feU entering a turn with only Jones slipping by. One lap later, Jones slid out, lelling Tipping back into second. Fesler, Dodds and James Jojner all gol by Jones before he could remount. Currie, on his HSKS/Fox/Renthal-backed KX, scored the easy win ahead of Tipping, Fesler, Dodds and Joiner. Currie picked up where he left off in the firsl moto as he rocketed out of the gate and info the point position. Tipping, Dodds, Jones and Fesler once again gave chase. Currie added 10 his lead ,v;th each passing lap while Fesler dropped out of the race with a blown base gasket and Joiner moved into the fifth spot. Currie would hold on for the win some 15 seconds ahead of Tipping. Dodds, Jones and Joiner rounded out the top five places. Currie later returned to win both 12Scc A motos over Jones.
