Compliance with the fluid catch pan rule is mandatory as of the AMA National at Homestead, Florida, on May 17-19. The AMA has also announced that displacement for fourstroke, three-cylinder motorcycles will be 551-900cc; variable-length carburetor / fuel-injection intake-tract devices that function while the engine is operating are prohibited; cam drive type and location in the engine must remain as in the originally approved modeL Suzuki has been testing its new GSXR750T at the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France. The testing is being done by the factory in conjunction with Suzuki France, and Australian Peter Goddard is one of the test riders. The American Motorcycle Institute of Daytona Beach, Florida, has signed an agreement with Triumph Motorcycles to provide techriician training on their new line of motorcycles. AMI will assist in training mechanics from Triumph dealerships na tionwide, as well as provide update seminars when necessary. A new permanent display at the Motorcycle Heritage Museum, tHied "Anatomy of a Motorcycle," has been created to explain motorcycles, engines and other components for the museum's various non-motorcycling visitors. The exhibit describes the many different components of motorcycles, and compares and contrasts modern components with older technology. As motorcycle technology evolves, the exhibit wilJ be updated accordingly. Cycle·News Rider(s) of ' the Month: Paul Krause, 1 Davis Ted Hunnicutt W HIRED: Mark T. Miller by Lockhart Phillips USA as Team Privateer Manager. Miller, a regular AMA 750cc Supersport road racer, will coordinate the 1996 Lockhart Phillips sponsorship program. Miller's new responsibilities won't keep him from racing, according to Lockhart Phillips. The same document issued by the AMA also outlines some changes which will go into effect in 1997. Most. notable among those are the following: Effective January 1, 1997, all AMA Superbikes must feature engine displacement as originally homologated; all Superbikes must be equipped with a dual-system front brake master cylinder capable of providing braking force in the event of brake-component failure in one system of the front brake assembly. The Colonial Plaza Inn has been named as the official hotel for the AMA Supercross Series opener in Orlando, Florida, on January 13. The hotel is e bent the rules a little this month in choosing November's Cycle News Ride.r of the Month. Usually, one rider's achievements are spotlighted, but in this case we made an exception and Selected three riders: Ty Davis, Ted Hunnicutt and Paul Krause. After all, their combined efforts led to one common goal - a victory in this • year's 28th running of the SCORE llaja 1000. Riding a modified KX500, the three Kawasaki Team Green riders proved to be the correct ingredient to give Kawasaki its eighth stra.ight Baja 1000 victory, three of which came in the challenging point-to-point versions of the race, as was the case this year. The 1146-mile race started in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, with Davis - the 1995 National Enduro Champion - leading off for the Green team. Approximately 10 miles into the race, Davis officially took over the lead position befote handing off the bike to Hunnicutt 450 miles later in El Crucero. Complete with headlights affixed to his bike late in the afternoon, Hunnicutt departed EI Crucero with a IS-minute lead and, despite experiencing some minor problems along the way, maintained that lead during his nearly 400-mile ride to La Purisirna, where Krause stood waiting for his tum on the bike. Krause rode the last 300 miles to La Paz, all at night, maintaining his team's lead to the checkered flag. A crash by Krause, however, late in the race reduced the team's lead to eight minutes by the time he crossed the finish line, just before 2 a.m. Davis, Hunnicutt and Krause completed the race in just under 19 hours and 31 minutes hours, at an average speed of 58.72 mph.
